This is exactly where my head is at. Pass the bread!
No pairing. Just let whatever came before linger in the glass if need be. Otherwise, leave it on its own.
Well, itâs my first course, so I guess it will be paired with whatever I serve my friend while we are sitting around before dinner figuring out what we are watching. Likely a mosel kabinett if I can select one soon and get it in the fridge.
I would go Rhys chard
On the grounds that it is already wet, soup does not go with wine. On the other hand leaving the glasses of oneâs guests empty is intolerable, which is why I rarely serve soup to guests.

It is quite open-I wouldnât die in a ditch over the matter but pedantry is fun-and it is genuinely a stretch to think that soup needs wine unless one really has to drink it with everything.
@Mike_Evans 's suggestion (with the caveat that itâs a light one like a Federspiel) is excellent. A curveball suggestion: something light and bubbly like a quality dry Prosecco.
As soon as I saw the Gruner suggestion upthread my brain locked onto that, and now I want to try this!
well, we decided we wouldnât probably finish even a single bottle and elected to just start with the wine Iâd planned for the crab/corn salad, Huet CdB DS 2005. It went quite well with our starter - toasted sesame semolina bread, rubbed with garlic and topped with a white bean spread I made earlier in the day with lots of cooked onion, garlic, a bit of lemon, fennel and herbs (rosemary and fennel fronds) and a big slice of ripe heirloom tomato. The chenin went well with that and ok with the soup. It also worked with the salad.
That sounds great to me, Maureen, and pretty much the way Iâd have gone about it.
I donât think anyone is saying that. It was just a question of âif we are having wine with this soup, what wine would work better?â
Chris, youâre missing the point. There are only three acceptable answers to wine pairing questions on Wine Berserkers:
1- Beer
2- Water
3- Esoteric white wine

That should be auto-pinned to the top of every food-wine pairing thread. Except probably also add Champagne and cocktails to the list.
You are correct and I am covered in rue. I take back my dry Prosecco recommendation. Substitute an Arunda Vivaldi from Alto Adige.
sounds like a lovely meal
