Coffee Roasting: the Behmor 1600 (and 1600 Plus) thread

glad to hear this–I have been afraid to install the new panel. Now I will try it soon.

successfully did the upgrade. Cool to see temperatures and have more adjustment options. Have to be there at the 75% mark to avoid the auto shutdown. I think I like it. Would like quicker cooling to avoid coasting, but have it dialed in fairly well now after 60+ roasts.

Alan, 60 roasts? How much coffee are you drinking or are you just giving it all away?

I’ve gifted some coffee to friends and it always seems to go over well. Nice.

I drink one or two mugs in morning, one in evening. Mail some to both kids, take some to office for staff, often give some to friends. Most roasts now re 400 grams, so end up w 340 grams, not a pound. The roast is fun and therapeutic. Am loving coffee now!

Corey, how did you like the coffee…did you roast it yet?

Yes, I roasted both of them.

The El Salvador was ok…not as complex as I like. I got dark flavors but no real richness in the cup.

The Geisha was very good. I think I sent you a PM (apologies if I did not) stating that I think I over-roasted it. First crack was rolling along slowly and I wanted to wait until it stopped, but it kept going for 2+ minutes. There were still some citrus and floral elements but they were somewhat obscured by the chocolate notes. It felt very well balanced and had a great mouthfeel. I greatly appreciate your generosity Mark, but if I’m being honest, I just can’t fathom spending that kind of dough on green beans despite liking them a good amount – there are beans I like just as well for 1/4 the price, though I appreciate the experience. Thank you again.

FWIW, I tend to really like Guatemalan and I tried the Las Rosas beans that Alan talked about upthread. I liked them a good amount chocolate notes on the palate with a distinctive peanut finish.

Exactly why I try different things…I haven’t tried the el sal yet but agree that at my level of experience I am not going to buy the geisha again

For whatever reason I wasn’t able to have home roasted last week so I slummed it with some beans I picked up at Dunkin Donuts. [BARF!] I don’t think I can ever go back…

Dunkin Donuts is terrible, I don’t know how people drink it. In a pinch, grab beans from Intelligentsia.

Alan, I do that often as well. Makes me look like a nice guy. Usually most batches I roast I put enough beans for 1 pot into a bag and take them to work for somebody. It convinced my boss to buy a Behmor…

For those who like the ‘fruitier’ coffees you may try the Ethiopian Lomi Tasha from Bodhi Leaf. Apparently it’s from Ninety Plus Coffee, an interesting company who works with farmers and extensively on processing methods to create distinctive profiles. I’ve bought many greens from 90+ and never been disappointed. I haven’t had the Lomi Tasha but will buy if any is left once I’m done with my current beans.

Holy hell, Bodhi has Java PTP Estate on sale for $2.98/lb if you buy 10 lbs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen green beans for less than $3/lb!

Probably a reason for that. Call me skeptical.

curses! Forgot that the new panel requires one to rehit start during a 30 second window 3/4 of the way through the roast or it shuts down. I have a batch of roasted peanuts now. Will grind and try them for education.

I was very conscious of that the first two roasts, forgot about it on the third, but lucked out because I happened to notice it.

So… why does this thread have the skull and crossbones icon?

Not sure - I’m removing it, whomever added it…

somebody have a bad roast? I love this thread.

I have followed this thread and I was wondering what type of medium vs darker roast controversy I had somehow missed!

My upgrade kit comes today! [dance-clap.gif]

And 32# of coffee comes tomorrow! pileon
