Cline - Carignane and Mourvedre

  • 2001 Cline Cellars Carignane Ancient Vine - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County (11/14/2009)
Quite enjoyable. Mildly floral nose of violets, with a hint of red fruits. Starting to brown a little. Peppery and still plenty of tannins.
  • 2002 Cline Cellars Mourvedre Small Berry - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County (11/14/2009)
Nose was OK, but once in the mouth it was oxidized and metallic tasting. NR (flawed)

Carignane was a pleasant surprise, as neither of these had been stored properly prior to the last year.

The 2007 Cline Old Vines Mourvedre is a really nice bottle for $13 up here.

$13 eh?

Will have to look to see if the local store carries Cline.

Thanks

I worked at Cline in '95…Carignane was $10! I bought cases of it. Ridiculously tasty. All old vines. Jancis Robinson calls Carignane the “poor man’s grape.” Well…I’ll take it!

Nice that you could hold on to a few.

After drinking it I wish it were a few. Sadly, just the one.

Think the more recent vintages will hold up as well?

Couldn’t tell you Todd. I just know that is was one of my favorite QPR’s, but
that was also back when Cline was producing 30K cases total. I would check
with the winery and see what they’re doing with the Carignane nowdays as opposed to the past. Could be worth buying some! Love those old vines out their in Contra Costa!

Jeez, definite price inflation. $16 now [berserker.gif]

Ya, I bet Jancis R. didn’t see THAT coming!!!
