Chicken-Garlic Sup with 'Old Telegram'

Tonight’s supper, with a nice fire in the fireplace, was chicken soup, made with rich chicken stock; light & dark meat chicken; carrots & celery; garlic; and Herbes de Provence. Accompanying the soup we had mozzarella & salami roll slices with tapenade. Wine was a 1988 Bonny Doon ‘Old Telegram’ - 100% Mourvedre; less than a cm below the cork, dark ruby-garnet in color with just a thin light edge; rich, spicy red & black fruit in nose and flavors; good, balanced mid-palate with adequate acidity, resolved tannins, and rich fruit; and a long red/black fruit finish. It was quite nice with the rich soup.

Then for dessert we had, while watching old Mavericks via TiVo, a Girardelli Chocolate (60% cocoa) and coffee bar shared with a 375ml of 1960 Kopke Colheita. It made a good combination, better than the younger Kopke & Rocha Colheitas with chocolates. It had a good balance of wood and fruit, better than the younger ones that were either too woody or just bright fruit.
