Chicago Restaurant Thread

And a new location in Highwood is coming. I would guess late this year based on the level of construction I saw when I biked past it a few weeks ago.

They basically gave PST a quick face lift, brought Bret Haier in to do the list, and gave Avec classic food. Honestly, I prefer it much more to Avec Classic

Visited Chicago for first time with a relative who is basically meat and potatoes eater. Gene and Georgetta’s worked out well. Easy to reserve a table, and was not rushed, lingered long after finishing double baked chocolate chip cantuccis and perfect macchiatos. Bone in strip was well charred and pink. House made spaghetti was cooked al dente, as promised, with a sauce tasting long simmered. Minestrone was a fresh summer veggie soup in a light tomato broth, no pasta or beans. Did not glance at the wine list. Corkage was $45, nice stems, good attitude, but poured my own.

PS- went to Malnatti’s for pizza the next day. State st location was packed for lunch, but around the corner from G&G, on n. wells, place was empty. Walked in and served right away.

Old School, but always reliable

Not sure if this is in the right place.

Looking for a chef/caterer to cook onsite for 20+ people

We used Alvin Yu (Fyusion Dining) a couple years ago for me and my wife’s 40th. Food was fantastic, he worked with me on the pairings and our kitchen was perfectly clean at the end of the night (price was reasonable relative to the competition too).

Does anyone have any favorite BYO spots, preferably Chinese?

Sun Wah up near Argyle - order the duck.

Unfortunately, we lean Sichuan - not terribly wine friendly

We will be in Chicago for the weekend of November sixth. We are going to Acanto Friday night (chosen by our cousin) and going to Miller’s Pub for pre-symphony dinner(chosen by our other cousin). He chose Miller’s because his office was near there forever. It looks ok but does anyone have any better nearby suggestions?

The Gage is next door to Acanto (which I like). The Gage would be a more upscale alternative to Miller’s Pub (which I also like, and it’s an institution). I think The Gage and Acanto are owned by the same group.

The Chicago Athletic Association is close by and provides some options.

A couple blocks south is The Exchange. Only been once, and it’s been awhile, but it was enjoyable.

Not sure which theater you are heading to (I’m presuming the CIBC/Shubert from the Miller’s recommendation) but if the Dearborn is an option, I’d consider it. We’ve known the owners/family for a couple of decades (their brother owns The Gage which is very good) and went there a week or two ago and had a great meal. Not a great wine list and not an etherial multi-course meal, but it overperformed our expectations. And Miller’s is not dining- it’s food. If you decide on The Dearborn, let us know. One on the owners encouraged us to name drop

I liked Yao Yao pickled fish when I went a few years ago. It’s on Cermak and has a Michelin bib.

Thinking about The Gage or The Dearborn before we see Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Chicago Theater in a few weeks. Which do folks prefer?

Both solid. My choice would be The Dearborn based mostly on the Grilled Hamachi Collars I had there recently (a real weakness of mine). A bit oversauced, but solid. A note to avoid the bar area if you’re sensitive to loud music.

Looks like we will probably go to The Gage as I cannot get a reservation at The Dearborn.

The Gage is always competent, and the venison burger is terrific.

Appreciate the positive comment. Must say that almost all recommendations from WB have been spot on.
