Hi Dan. I want to try this. My local Total Wine carries this bottle. Is this the one you are talking about?
Same producer, different bottling, I’ve had the one in your picture, don’t remember what vintage.
This is what I currently have:
I’m down to my last 3 bottles from a case, it’s terrific and IMO is at peak.
I trust this producer completely.
Whoops, I just looked closer. They changed the label but that is exactly the same bottling.
Mullineux Chenin Blanc Kloof Street Old Vine is a fantastic wine, and it’s a stupendous bargain at $20. Some vintage variation, of course, but that’s a good thing.
Un Voyage dans les Vignes - Pithon-Paille Anjou Mozaik Chenin Blanc
I’m seeing for $16 USD in Europe. I’d be all over it if I could
Someone mentioned this above and I agree on Kloof Street. At the super value, party wine, level I recently had a Myburgh Bros Chenin that was quite solid for less than $10, and Badenhorst the Curator blend is not bad and Myburgh Bros Chenin. I’d consider either of those if hosting a party or something.
Good to know! I’ve looked at, but never purchased, that Badenhorst. Sounds like I should give it a whirl, with expectations properly set.
Raats Unoaked Chenin Blanc, South Africa
$15.99
Very satisfying and quite decent typicity.
In the times of ridiculous WDC deals it was the inexpensive wine I’d use to round out a purchase to hit the coupon minimum. It isn’t a word beater, but it was a pleasant bottle. It really would work great as a white to pour at an event. It’s a blend with Chardonnay so a bit less chenin character, but thtat is fine for what it is.
Chidaine is the man, as far as I am concerned. When they are on, they’re genius in a bottle–not entirely immune to premox, however, and prices seems to have doubled, since I last purchased (which was 2019 or 2020).
Our own @Tegan_Passalacqua also makes lovely CB from old own rooted vineyards in northern cal, under the Sandlands label. (One of his reds, maybe the Mataro?, shows up in Drops of God.) These are some of my favorites from him.
this makes for a nice six pack of cbs that the vendor I want to order from offers and that were recommended in this thread, even though most of the wines exceed my budget, so I will probably just leave it at that. however, just playing around: if I wanted to add a huet sec to my list of purchases (I will definitely go for a demi-sec and moelleux–most likely le Mont–though), which one would you go for? Looking for something approachable, some residual sugar, rather exotic and concentrated profile.
Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu sec 2022
Vouvray Le Mont sec 2022
Vouvray Clos de Bourg sec 2021
Might be interesting to compare the sec, demi-sec, and mouelleux le mont…
Here is a discussion of the various styles and preferences amongst the three.
None of those secs are going to show much in the way of residual sugar, just a light touch. '22 is a bigger vintage and '21 more classic. Personally I’d probably want Le Mont but also be inclined towards '21 over '22. LHL’s leaner style would likely work well with '22. Can’t really go wrong, I guess.
Thanks for this. Considering your thoughts about the vintages, what do you mean with big? Just trying to understand if a bigger vintage might actually suit my palate
At the risk of over-generalizing, by bigger I mean a hotter vintage resulting in more ripe, rounder flavored, larger-scaled wines with more fruit and alcohol and less acidity. 2021 was a cooler and more problematic vintage in the Loire generally with hail and frost issues in some places. I don’t believe I’ve had from either vintage from Huet so I can’t speak to specifics. I tend to prefer wines, and especially white wines, from more traditional vintages with greater acidity and less roundness.
Michael, thank you. Given your description, the 22 sounds like a sensible choice for what I’m looking for in a CB at the moment.
Paul, I just picked upa 2005 Vigneau Chevreau Demi, any thought on what to expect?
Tasted an amazing 2023 Chenin Blanc from Beaumont Wines in Walker Bay, South Africa at my local wine bar/store. Ended up purchasing several bottles!
My regular “house white” glass at my club here in Hong Kong is the 2023 Viliera Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch. For me it’s a solid everyday white which I get for around US$15; WSPro shows it from a couple of places in the USA at ~US$18-21.
Sorry, no idea. Unfortunately, my cb knowledge as of now is very limited. Perhaps, however, some of the good berserkers contributing to this thread might be able to help
