calling the 212 number forwards to a 917 number, which is full mailbox.
anyone that still has wine at chelsea wine vault (if it exists) is in a tough spot.
edit: was just pinged by a Famous Wine Internet Person to point out the address for chelsea wine storage is now 777 Seventh Ave which is nowhere near the prior location. When did they move?
What a lot of wine storage disasters we’ve seen in the NYC area:
There was the place in Dumbo (where I almost took space) that closed with something like only a month’s notice in the mid-2000s, leaving customers in the lurch. (I managed to get a small locker at Chelsea right before the Dumbo people started queuing up for space there, leading to a waiting list.)
Then there was the place in the West 20s (where friends and I considered renting a locker) that was wiped out in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and where they smashed customers’ bottles carrying out wet cardboard boxes during the cleanup.
Then there was Sherry-Lehman selling storage customers’ wines this year.
Now this. And some place in DC is shutting down with little notice, right?
I have stored my wines at River Valley since 2007. Very, very happy with them.
For me storage is not just dumping wine into cool space. It is very much of a service industry, and although I am sure plenty of other reputable companies that do the same kind of thing, this is what I get from River Valley.
River Valley has saved me a fair amount of money over the years, as they inspect every bottle that come in and alerts me to any condition problems, low fills, leaks etc.
I never have to at home to sign for wine.
Because the wine is delivered straight to warehouse, there is never a question of whether the wine is the same bottle originally shipped. Again helps with disputes.
Photographs. This is important not only for wine sales, but also if you do tastings, and you can avoid the embarrassment of sending a substandard bottle.
They have a trucking to send to and pick up from NY.
If you ever need wine storage or logistics services, I’m at River Valley Wine Cellars in Westchester. We pickup/deliver to NYC, throughout CT and Westchester and NJ.
Prior to taking over RVWC about 18 months ago, I ran Domaine in NJ for their first seven years and also was a part of Zachys Private Client Services team.
In the last 18 months I’ve added more racking, updated refrigeration equipment and security, got a new generator, new order picker, new loading dock and just this past weekend resurfaced our back lot and put in a concrete slab in front of loading dock. On the horizon: much more including a photo lab for taking great photos of your wine.
I’ll be at many of the big events in NYC - Fete de Champagne, Festa del Barolo, etc. and some of the offlines so hopefully we’ll rub elbows in person soon.
close friend just went through this over the past few weeks. he kept hounding them and they finally responded and he got his wine out. that’s all the info i have and it’s clearly not great, but there is some hope i suppose. get your wine out asap is the only logical move.
I used to store there. I got my wine out of there a few years ago after some wines were lost and they were generally unresponsive as some others reported. Would be impossible to reach them either via email or phone. Only way I used to manage to get a hold of someone was call the store and ask them to transfer me over to the storage.
Hopefully everyone that stores there manages to get their wines out safely and quickly. Would not recommend storing there
Been storing there since '05 or so without any issues until this summer. Haven’t lived in NY since 2010, but it’s nice to have bottles available when visiting. They went silent on me a few weeks ago, but I did manage to get everything out with Ian’s help.
