After the great food, wine, company and experience we enjoyed at Rob McKay’s 100 point dinner, I was trying to think of a “good” reason for another get together.
We share many “good buy” experiences and no-brainer daily drinkers on this board, why not use that as an excuse to have an off line? In Theory, we meet to share our personal daily drinker/good buys and do a blind tasting or rate/score the wines by varietal. Since there are no great expectations, we can go simple with burgers, dogs, whatever you can cook on Napa Valley Wine & Cigar’s “Berserker BBQ,” or kick it up a notch or two and smoke a brisket or something. Generally, we can go with the Keep It Simple Stupid concept. Of course everybody can bring a special bottle to have after the tasting and maybe throw in a good dessert. (Maybe I can bribe Lisa McKay into making something like we had at the 100 pointer.)
If we identify a wine or two that everybody or a majority like, there might be enough people interested in them that we can buy by the pallet, further reducing the cost of the daily drinker. Right now, I can think of O’reilly’s Pinot and Educated Guess Cab as two of our dailies and I know there are a number of others that have been mentioned. There are several successful “Wine Clubs” that pool their money, get the best deal and sell the excess at or just below retail to support their club and pay incidentals.
Been giving it some thought. December is a pretty busy month for everybody. So any thoughts:
Will everybody be back on their feet by mid-January?
If BBQ is unrealistic due to weather, the Old Adobe Restaurant down the street is willing to cater Mexican food or probably anything else we ask for. There’s always burgers and dogs, pizza or I can make my infamous Kraft Mac & Cheese with bacon bits? Kinda keep it simple like the wines “we will start with.” After dutifully tasting and taking our notes on the Daily Drinkers, we might have to follow up with, you know, some other wines we like.
On a side note. How about the rest of you? Regional get togethers on the same day, for the same purpose?
The Southern Cal, Florida, Phoenix and Dallas groups can easily do BBQ with their’s.
Napa might be a little cool or wet but a good bet.
New York and Boston? Well, they might have to do a virtual tasting from their snowed in homes, if the have electricity.
I’m open to suggestions, or just like the WWOTW, you can tell me what to do and where to go.
The groups can post and compare the best value daily drinkers readily available by region, or unknown in other regions. And, best of all, we have an excuse to get together for the “benefit” of all “Berserker” members.
January would be fine with me.
Do you have any guidelines for “daily drinkers”, i.e. upper celing on $$, say $20.00 retail or auction? I have a few $20’ish BDX which may be interesting or I’ll have to hunt down some local foothills wines near my area.
As to a follow-up set of wines, Winter is always nice “port” weather.
PS: once again thank you Randy, Carrie, Rob and Lisa for the wonderful event. Sorry I had to bug out so quickly, but I hate to keep my wife and kids waiting. And… I missed out on the Sauternes and Schrader. Hope the Riessec showed OK.
