Hi all,
As many of you know, I have a soft spot for Magdelaine, and I still mourn its demise in 2011. Since then, I have accumulated a large number of bottles; too many in fact.
Magdelaine is a type of wine which is almost extinct. It’s a traditional Saint Emilion, with wonderful balance, aromatics and a sense of terroir. As these traditional wines disappear with climate change, our children will never have the opportunity to taste theses amazing wines.
Every year, I try and put together a charity event. The last Magdelaine lunch was in 2022, but after an extraordinary bottle of 1982 last Friday, I knew I wanted to do another.
So on September 19th, I am going to try and get enough people to do a two bottle tasting. The wines will be fourteen bottles in all, going back to 1970, but I have also came across some 1949s, so I’ll be adding those.
I am dividing equally the proceeds between two charities, one for each bottle.
The first you may be familiar with; Midnight Run; where groups of people drive into Manhattan to give the homeless, food toiletries and clothing. But its two way experience; seeing and meeting people who have fallen through the cracks, is for many a life altering experience. This was brought home to me when my son Philip was on a run, and heard his name being called. He looked round and it was one of his former soccer coaches.
The second is Operation Smile. This is an international charity that operates on people with cleft palates. For those receiving the surgery, they no longer have hide their faces. It is especially transformative for children, and the pictures on the website show the incredible results, and their first ever smiles.
The minimum donation is $500 plus the cost of the meal. I do hope you can come; it will be a great event, with some really wonderful wines.
Restaurant is s Talia in Porchester, and the start time 1:00 pm
