Champagne price increases

I would go for the '08 Rare Rare. I have had a few times and really like it. That price is a steal.

We have been lucky with a lot of great Champagnes this century. Whilst my white wine glass does runneth over with Champagne at the moment, I am mostly drinking from 7 vintages, 02/04/06/07/08/12/13. I would not mind a little more variety and I don’t need to go as deep in future vintages as did in the past.

In the general downturn of wine sales and new generations being told not to drink at all, I might guess that the fine wine markets might tighten up, with the top tier always being sought and the rest left to their own devices. But with Champagne I think there will always be broad appeal, with people always willing to celebrate, and splurge. I guess we wait and see…but I have a hard time buying Champagne for the cellar at $400 a bottle…

Who would pay $350 for 2011 Krug? So many better options at that price point or well below.

I agree. I just received an offer for 2012 Taittinger Comtes at barely over half of that cost.

$210 for 2015 Cristal is a good trend. Release offers were 25-30% higher last year.

Spotted this email from Mann Fine Wine yesterday,

"Somewhat to my surprise, I received an email last week informing me of a price reduction in Dom Perignon 2015 from Moet Hennessy. Yes, you read it correctly - a reduction. I think this is the first time in over 20 years of dealing with the MH stable that I’ve known them to drop the price on Dom Perignon.

In short, this is a very sensible decision after a very aggressive price increase, and this brings it much more back in line with the market."

Still at or above what you can buy the 12 and 13 for so why bother?

Huh just got a mailer for 2013 DP at $199/btl from JJ Buckley. Don’t think I’ve seen a sub-$200 offer on 13 DP before, at least for unbundled single bottles. Prices must be coming down.

Prices have come down, but that doesn’t mean you will see similar reductions from most US based retailers.

2013 Dom Perignon is below US$150 here in HK, so this is very much market-specific pricing.

I couldn’t resist snagging a few.

My experience has been that Dom Perignon is a Champagne where there has been significant efforts to maintain certain price levels in the US, one of the largest markets and where DP has historically had a premium reputation that the owner fights hard to maintain.

Huh really?

Few days ago at Mong Kok Langham Marketplace they were asking over $300 for DP.
Any good spots to check out? I’m there a few times next month.

Well Wine-Searcher lists dozens of vendors selling it between HK$1135 (US$147) and HK$1250. But most of them are online-only - shops cost a fortune to rent in HK, so most serious wine distribution is online only. Some can arrange pickup from an office somewhere.

I don’t have any specific recommendations for Dom, but I have used Lyndhurst Wines for other bottles occasionally and their service has been fine.
