Champagne & Burgundy - quick impressions from a weekend trip to SF

Took an impromptu trip to San Francisco because I was in the area business. Some quick impressions of wines over the weekend:

88 Grivot Richebourg – Fantastic! I had this once before, at Lola in Dallas, and really enjoyed it. This bottle was even better. I was under the impression that this was made during Grivot’s “Accad” phase, but a friend recently told me that Grivot didn’t use the more controversial “Accad” methods on his Richebourg. In any event, as noted above, this was really good and drinking fantastic.

88 Lafarge Volnay – tired. Didn’t finish the bottle – which is something for me.

89 Deutz Blanc de Blanc – tasty, but a little over the line on the butterscotch side. Probably better a few years ago.

90 Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Millenaires – Very very delicious bubbles. Drinking really well. I liked the 95 of this and the 90 is as good or better.

NV Francoise Bedel Entre Ciel et Terre – Nice bottle of bubbles. Never heard of this producer before. A big champagne and drinking pretty nicely.

I am a big fan of Charles Heidsieck Millenaiers as well and have recently enjoyed the 90 ( shipped direct from the producers cellars in 2008) along with the 95 (purchased locally in 2008) both individually and side by side. The 90 is clearly the richer more complex wine at the moment but I can’t wait to see how the 95 develops. CH is a top notch Champagne producer with approachable retail prices and broad availability.

Thanks for sharing your tasting notes

I’m very pleased to see some notes on the '95 Bollinger Blanc de Millenaires - I’ve got a mag of this wine, awaiting its peak…

Bolly Grand Annee you mean French-sicle?
