Does anyone know who petitioned for the formation of the Central Coast AVA, and why the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA was specifically excluded from it?
Don’t know but a little quick research shows the Santa Cruz AVA was established 4 years prior to the Central Coast AVA (81 vs 85). So perhaps those that established the Santa Cruz AVA opted not to join the Central Coast AVA.

I don’t know, but I bet that back in the early 80s, the folks in the Santa Cruz Mountains had no interest in being lumped in with the Central Coast crowd. In those days, the Central Coast had little cachet and was probably associated most strongly with vegetal cabernet.
