Cellaring questions

My wine cooler is already full… I have an offsite storage. For those who have the same problem, how long do you leave your wine in their shipping boxes before you bring them to your offsite storage? Our basement is around 68F. Thanks

Months. Sometimes years, if I’m particularly lazy. For most wine, keeping them in passive storage at room temp for a while isn’t going to hurt much.

My suggestion is to thoroughly inventory all arriving boxes after taking receipt. If there is a problem it’s easier to resolve contemporaneously. My personal ‘error rate’ on shipments runs about 1-2% with some vendors being bigger offenders. If you had older bottles from auction shipped to you, I think it’s better to get those sideways as soon as possible, so perhaps put those cases on their sides, lest corks dry out.

I ran out of space and stored some wines at room temp for a couple of years! (Basement so never higher than 70) There is a concern of Brett but I think that would be unusal

I have almost everything shipped to my offsite, so they handle the boxes. Then I go down there after everything arrives in Spring / Fall to unpack and inventory.

68F wouldn’t worry me much, if at all, for at least a couple years, probably. Over an extended period of time, however, wines stored at 68F are going to age differently than wines stored at 55F.

I usually take new deliveries to my offsite storage within a week or so, but my storage is just a 5-10 minute drive from my house so it’s not really a hassle. Basement conditions aren’t going to harm wine over weeks or months, I wouldn’t fret too much over it.
