The major difference with an app is the ability to reclaim some screen real estate, and that will also give us better access to the camera and GPS. As someone noted, whether website or app, you can save a link to your homescreen (and we added nice icons to the site to make this look nicer). The last difference with an app benefits CellarTracker – a chance to reach many new users via the AppStore etc.
Eric,
My one complaint is that the new mobile site does not seem to allow me to display
by “wine ready to drink”. This is the primary way I access your site. Hopefully you
will add that.

Q: What functionality is exposed on the mobile site?
A: The initial preview of the mobile website is fairly limited. It lets you search and browse tasting notes and general information on any wine or wine within your cellar. As of the initial release, the editing functionality was not yet implemented, but we have been fleshing that out as shown below.
As of 9/12/2013, we now have functionality to let you add, edit and delete your tasting notes. We have also added Twitter and Facebook sharing. You can also upload wine label images.
As of 9/20/2013, you can now drink a bottle through the mobile site.
As of 10/11/2013, you can undrink a bottle, edit consumed bottles, and search on a specific CellarTracker barcode.
As of 10/15/2013, you can add bottles to your cellar and edit existing purchases.
As of 10/24/2013, you can accept pending deliveries.
As of 11/6/2013, you can edit wishlists (tagging wines, editing, removing).
As of 11/19/2013, account creation and password reminder/reset functionality is implemented.
As of 12/13/2013, tasting note commenting and helpful voting is implemented.
As of 12/16/2013, help content and the help system are exposed.
More editing functionality (bottle editing, wine and vintage creation, summarized views, > the drinkability report> ) will continue to be fleshed out. We plan to add ALL core CellarTracker functionality over the next few months.
Q: Will this work on Android, Blackberry, iPhone, etc?
A: The mobile website should work on any modern smartphone that has support for HTML5. While we primarily test with iOS/Safari, Android/Chrome, and Windows Phone/IE, the site should work on a wider variety of modern devices and browsers.
Q: Why can’t I find the CellarTracker app in the App Store?
A: Right now, we are just delivering a mobile website. There is no app. You access the site in the browser on your smart phone.
Q: Do you plan on making native apps for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone?
A: Yes, once we have sufficiently fleshed out the mobile functionality, we will then look at wrapping this in native apps for a variety of platforms. We expect to reach this point in Q1 2014.
Eric, my only complaint is that neither the mobile nor the desktop version will read my mind, open and decant my wine, and call me a cab. And the @$&#%! FAQ says nothing about these features being added. Is that really too much to ask?
That’s not in the FAQ, but an advanced feature… it’s there… u just don’t know how to access it… (that’s what i find with CT when i wish it had some feature)…
