Cellar Stats that shocked me

Well played, sir!

So, you said “Port or Douro wine”. How much of your 187 was truly Port and how much was table wine from the Douro? And, what have you got against Madeira?

cheers,
fred

Fred was reading closely…

114 bottles were Port
71 bottles were Douro wines
2 bottles of Madeira (which I have to research deeper as I know I’ve had more than that)

Of course these stats are only from my cellar. Earlier this week we had a vertical of Fonseca and Fonseca-Guimaraens Vintage Ports from 1933 to 2005 (33 bottles of 750ml in all). There were 13 of us at the tasting and hardly a drop was left.

Yes I do everynight this appears on my computer screen and thus requires me to enjoy some fine Port [wink.gif]

Each of you drank 2.5 bottles of port in one evening??? Holy Crap!!! Something is terribly wrong here.

Not really when you think about it, and it’s closer to 2 bottles in reality. We started at 6:30pm, tasted 1/2 of them, broke for dinner for an hour or so, then back for the last half and then revisit all of them till they were gone at 3am. Lots of water during those almost 9 hours and it’s pretty easy to do. Think about how much the average Berserker drinks at an offline event in one evening and you’ll be surprised at how much it actually is. In this case, when you spread it out over the course of many hours with a break for food it isn’t as bad as you think.

Spitting or no spitting? I’ve moved over to 100% spitting when I taste, for various reasons - driving, tasting capability, reduced alcohol tolerance, etc.

Very little to no spitting for everyone there. No driving as we all took cabs or trains.

My bad. I didn’t realize we were talking about an 8.5 hour tasting event.

LOL : I have seen you & Roy in action. I am sure that this is a conservative number for the Port Authority. Just 2 Madeira? who are you kidding [wink.gif]

That is just from my cellar. However, I’ve had WAY more Port, Douro wines, and wines from other countries than that last year. While Roy has far more than me…last October I spent almost 3 weeks in the Douro and tasted around 250 Ports and Douro wines alone in that short time frame. I’m too scared to total up the entire years worth of tastings.

Unlike Andy, I can’t track how many bottles were opened from my own cellar. However, with Port, Madeira and Douro wines … I had nearly 600 tasting notes written in 2010 for just these 3 categories. Then again, that doesn’t mean I drink all of that wine. I don’t even want to know the total number of wines I had last year including all varieties. [truce.gif]
