Cellar Planner v1.0 (Excel tool)

I like to plan most things out in excruciating detail. My wine cellar is no exception. Eric’s CellarTracker is an indispensable tool for keeping track of what you own now (and what’s pending). However, I also want a tool to help me plan for the future - to answer questions such as how big my cellar should be, how much I should be spending per year, how many bottles of each type I should own, and so on.

To do this, I cooked up a simple Excel spreadsheet. For each type of wine, it lets you specify average age, bottles per year drunk, and average price per bottle. It then calculates things like bottles per type you need to buy per year, total value, total cellar size, and so on.

Anyone minimally conversant in Excel should be able to easily modify this. By default, only the “Years to age”, “Bottles/year” and “$/bottle” fields are editable. To customize, unprotect the sheet and go to town. (I image the most common operation would be to rename wine types or add rows for additional types of wine.)

Eric, if you’re reading, it would be very cool if you added functionality like this to CellarTracker (somehow).

Forward projecting “cellar algebra” is definitely an area I hope to be getting into in the future. It’s a bit challenging, as the very nature of the task is a bit open-ended … and Excel is a much better tool for ad hoc stuff than anything I can dream up.
