2005 Pax Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/12/2009)
Purple in color. Mostly opaque. The nose is cooler climate Syrah to me. I.e. black raspberries, leather, charred meats. On the palate, this is nice, not over the top and well crafted. Also not worth the $70 I paid for it. At $40, I might buy again (assuming a smaller bottle size). I have liked many Pax wines, but between the bottle size and the pricing, they have not delivered enough for me. Obviously lots of people like them more. (91 pts.) -
2008 Sineann Pinot Noir Oregon - USA, Oregon (12/12/2009)
Out of a 375. This bottle was a bit more open than the last one. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is strong with cherries, some cola, a nice hint of funk. On the palate, this is showing some layering although quite tight. Nice cherry flavors with great texture. Very nice bottle. (91 pts.) -
2005 Masi Campofiorin Ripasso Veronese IGT - Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT (12/12/2009)
Always a wine i like that ages well for 5 to 8 years. $20 Ohio. Ruby in color. The nose has cherries, leather, some black olives and a bit of floral ntoes. On the palate, this is smooth and drinks with a smooth backbone of acidity. Excellent with Latkes for Chanukah. (90 pts.) -
2007 Château Pesquié Côtes du Ventoux Terrasses - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Ventoux (12/12/2009)
I have gone thru a bunch of these in the last month. LAways better on Day 2 or 3 IMO. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has raspberries, violets and leather. Some tannins. It takes some time to come together. Disjointed out of the bottle, but much better on Day 2. This is on sale locally and well worth around $15 a bottle. (89 pts.) -
2007 Cellers Can Blau Montsant Mas de Can Blau - Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant (12/12/2009)
One of my favorite labels. $17 Ohio and good value at that price. The first night was too oaky though. By night two, it had integrated much more. Black cherries with some cherry kool-aid flavors. Not much complexity but certainly drinkable. Juicy wine. This would be popular with non-geeks I am sure. (88 pts.) -
2007 Paolo Scavino Vino da Tavola Rosso - Italy, Vino da Tavola Rosso (12/12/2009)
No idea what grapes are in this. Around $16 Ohio. Ruby in color. The nose is cherries with some leather and anise. A big streak of acidity and reasonably thin wine. That is, however, what I expected and i liked this wine. It went well with pasta and might age a year or two (not sure). It is a very nice “cheap Italian” wine. 87
