I see a lot of people make a lot of fuss about this wine and it seems to be reasonably priced, so I put my name on the wait list a few weeks back just in case… but I’ve never had it before.
I know there’s some available at retail if you look for it, but there are so many bottlings, I don’t know where to start.
Does anyone have some recommendations of what to try? Should I look for something close to current release, or something with 5+ years on it? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
All the Carlisles that I have had have been nothing but great. As a starter, I would probably seek out an appellation zin or syrah as they are the most readily available and least costly (relatively speaking). As for specific wines that I think are outstanding…Tom Feeney Zins, Two Acres & Papa’s Syrah.
Happily, I have lots of Carlisle in my cellar so I went light this round – I ordered a Montafi Zin, a Papa’s Syrah, a SC Syrah, and a Gold Mine Ranch Zin. My favorite is the Montafi (formely known as Tom Feeney) with at least three years of age. If you’re ordering for the first time, I highly recommend the Montafi – powerful with some elegance, balanced, and very complex.
Although the shipping isn’t cheap they more than balance that out with great pricing on the wines.
Hard to scale back on these but I’m really into Rivers-Marie and Auteur and I’m hoping to get some Rhys and Rochioli SVDs this year.
