Carlisle Owners retiring

Cheers to you Mr Officer.

Like many, I’m bummed to see there is an endpoint on the horizon, but super happy that Mike and his family can exit on their terms. Some thoughts I’ve had on the news this week with some time to reflect:

  • I knew at least a decade ago, and probably longer, that Carlisle would be the last mailing list I would drop. Beyond the pricing and exemplary service, Carlisle can appeal to both my wine nerd brain and to my non wine geeks alike, its the Swiss Army Knife wine producer.

  • I remember vividly my first ‘aha’ moment with Carlisle. I was watching Mad Men, the episode where Don goes to visit the real Mrs. Draper in CA. Don et all were eating fried abalone in a bar, and I looked down at the bottle of the 2007 Papera, and just thought, 'wow, this something I gotta get to know…really well"

  • I share the Carlisle allocation with my dad and have done so since joining in 2008 (ish). some years back he once exclaimed: “you know, Carlisle makes you feel good”. Brilliant.

And in honor, we had the 16 Carlisle - Carlisle Vineyard watching Chinatown last night. A+ Pairing.

  • 2016 Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (7/21/2024)
Even from a p&p this beauty was in full blossom. Dark Zinberries and the trademark blood oranges that so often define a Carlisle RR Zin. Seems to be at full capacity and firing on all cylinders, balanced with deceptive freshness, this both knocks it out of the park from both the hedonistic and refreshment perspectives. Drink this gem now. (94 points)

As The Stones sing … it’s with “Mixed Emotions”. Happy to see you go out on your own terms and take that next adventure … Hope to do that myself in the next 5-7 years. Personally, a little sad to know that there is only so much Carlisle to be had. As said above many times, so good, so consistently enjoyable. Cheers!

I have been on the mailing list since the 2005 vintage. I checked cellar tracker and I could not believe how many bottles I have consumed of Carlisle…242! (most of any producer) This is my last mailing list and sad to see it come to an end but very happy for Mike and Kendall as they head into retirement!

The more I think about it, the more I think this is total BS. Do they not realize who we are? I’ve had “Carlisle” on my calendar, twice a year, for 20+ years, not to mention other visits. Exactly how am I supposed to replace those days?

I plan on driving up to Santa Rosa, twice a year, and demanding that the Carlisles open bottles and feed me pizza.

This craziness needs to end now.

Alan may have the opportunity to get acquainted with a different officer…

Funny how Carlisle fits all occassions, it can be any season, even a 108 degree summer day and the grill gets going and your hand just naturally reaches for a Carlisle red and it doesn’t really matter if its Zin, Syrah, PS or something else you know it’ll go great with burgers, brats, chicken, steak, salmon, mushrooms or veggies, whatever is on the grill.

Following my own advice…made shrimp fried rice and grabbed a Carlisle 2007 Rossi Ranch since the 2001 Tom Feeney said 16.6% on label. Delicious, even out of a proper water glass.
