Art, looks like your stars have aligned today. Cameron has a Black Friday offer today: 30% off (he limits the discount on several of the new cab releases, however), free gift bags and free shipping on a case.
Had the 545 last night. Definitely a very big wine. Hard to get a sense of what is going on beneath the oak and tannins at this point. The family enjoyed it, but I think this may not be my thing. I felt similarly about the 535, but at $25 or so I’m happy to keep tasting through these cabs to see if any appeal to me. I realize I’m trying them very very young.
If you go to the CH website, the weekend sale seems to have depleted their supply. Lots 502, 515, 525, 535, 545 and 555 all have that “low stock” icon on them. However I noticed that the 515 was at one point sold out (but returned) and at various times this weekend the 535 (I think) was “low stock” then back to normal, so perhaps there’s more where this came from. But if not, and you want some of this stuff, you might want to make that happen soon.
Did anyone else take advantage of the CH sales yesterday? I went in for a mixed case. I have only had one of his wines and can’t remember which one other than that it was a cab. Very good for the price.
I had the CH Lot 501 Howell Mountain Cab over the weekend. No notes taken but I’d say this was my favorite of the 500 series cabs. Decanted for about 3 hours. The oak is definitely there and the tannins are still substantial, but this has a mint-inflected rusticity amidst all the dense fruit that I found appealing and was enjoyed by group of non geeks.
I drink very little Napa Cab so I have idea how a wine like this compares in its class, but I’d buy again for $25.
Just a heads up…while I absolutely stand behind the wines and everything I’ve written about them (Lots 596, 597, 598, 599), they are very young right now vis-a-vis bottle age. The Lot 599 was bottled August 20th and the others First week of August so you can see we only have two to two and half months in bottle at this point.
