…too smart for comfort…
@Cameron_Hughes Just a suggestion……From a marketing perspective, you should just increase the price of every bottle by $1.50, rather than charging $18 to ship a case……I think for most consumers the perceived value of free shipping outweighs the price increase of the product being sold……people like thinking that they are getting something for free
Not in ‘spam’
I’m more likely to buy a $169 case w free shipping than $149 case with $19 shipping btw.
Yes ditto with the above posters. Just add it to the price, don’t mess with shipping costs.
I also thought of this, and it’s true. But is it?
Mr. Hughes is no dummy. Same as all those restaurants that charge a 5% fee for “costs”.
It’s awful - but somehow it works. I think the average consumer wants to see low upfront prices like $11 a bottle and then get hit for the “ouch” $19 shipping.
But to be clear, my original thought was identical to all of yours. But that’s cause we all want that everywhere. The 4-5% “automatic cost surcharge” stuff is so absurdly cringe.
This isn’t that - but I think he’d probably do better just hiking the bottle prices and keeping the free shipping. But again, he aint dumb. He clearly knows how to sell wine and it’s probably better to keep the bottles as low as possible.
Some truth to that. This $11 bottle of wine was so good, I have to charge $13!
Kinda like how I get excited about the more expensive offerings. Cam’s charging $25, must be awesome!
Whereas, I’m going to spend $20 to ship $11 bottles of wine? What am I doing?
We’re all idiots of course, but I guess it’s the human condition.
the problem with hiking the bottle prices is it adds to the discrepancy between what ends up at Costco and what sells direct. Now the $15 direct is $17, and Costco is still $13, so more berserkers will be bitching
I’m ambivalent and won’t change my purchasing habits
I could see people complaining about this. Good point. $19 a case for shipping is a reasonable request. I liked the prices before and but I think it’s fine.
The other reason to add it to the bottle cost is that is incentivizes case purchases. Problem with charging for shipping a case is now I’m more likely to just by 6, whereas I have always previously been ‘I can find 6 more bottles of something to save from paying shipping’ - so up the price per bottle (just charge the 6-bottle per bottle price for 12?) and have the incentive be the “free” shipping. I think you’d get more volume per order that way.
Good point but not all Costco’s carry it, and it’s not all camx wines, so it’s a relatively constrained gripe for those who have that access. I do think it would help if Cam could signal on release emails which wines will also potentially be available in retail (ie Costco) especially if that is essentially the cheaper distribution method for him to get it into our hands (vs paying for shipping).
He has to give Costco a cut, not sure its cheaper for him. Costco isnt known for giving good deals to its suppliers, they are very cut throat on margins.
Meanwhile … in Canada, there is this other Cameron Hughes…
Yeah, I know Cameron actually. We met up in NYC years ago…his energy is contagious so I can see how he is good at his job. Cool guy…
Google “hockey teeth cameron hughes” to find the other cameron
Lot50 out again…
Oh it was just found laying around….
Will sell out again and more will be found!
And Cam gets to decide how much goes to tranche one, or two.
And to change according to his situation.
I tried to use my referral $25 credit on a case purchase today and it wouldn’t go through. Not sure why it would not apply to the Lot 38 Chardonnay. Also, no explanation anywhere as to what lots were or were not applicable. Anyone else experience this or can provide more info?
Happened to me, as well.
I didn’t buy that lot but how is that a bad thing?
It’s $12 wine…
