Happy Birthday, my dear young friend.
And Tom is about as close to a topic in Wine Talk as any wine I’ve ever had
And though I’d like to say that I followed him from the very start, I’m simply not that old
Cheers!

Happy Birthday Tom. Always love your tasting notes and posts.

Happy Birthday, Tom,
Keep writing those notes and doing what you do–an invaluable resource and a generous person.
Wee Bloody Pulpit: So how is it a guy from Kansas of all places and a nuclear engineer at _Los Alamos_followed so many great winemakers from the start? I think the affinity of scientists (especially chemists for wine is well-known), but from the little I know nothing on the quantum level has much to do with winemaking. And Kansas for chrissakes…well, you get the picture…one of a kind!
+100 on this one lol…nicely played.
Thanks, Larry. Most of the folks who followed TomHill from the very start are now dead. So be glad you haven’t.
Well, Josh…learning about wine in Kansas is a bit like learning to surf in DeathVlly. Not impossible…but pretty unlikely.
I had a fair share of Taylor’s LakeCountryRed and Almaden/PaulMasson in college (KansasState). It was better than Coors (no CoorsLite in those days),
but only by a sconch. Then (about '68), my major professor had me over for dinner. With the grilled steak, he served a Lynch-Bages '66.
“Hmm…this is not bad”. Then w/ Sue’s GrandMarnier Souffle, he served a d’Yquem ‘65. “Holy $hit…this is what wine is like??” I was hooked
and it’s been down-hill every since. What a hell of a thing to do to one of your graduate students. And then at the end of dinner, Ken said “It’s
kinda neat to save the labels of the wines you like”. Now…at 100,000 labels, plus, I could wring his friggin’ neck.

Happy Birthday, Tom!
Thats a great story. Happy bday Mr. Hill!
Happy Birthday! That was quite an introduction to wine.
Happy birthday Tom!
Nice story, Tom. Happy birthday! Keep them notes rolling!
Happy B-day Tom. Post some labels one day.
That would actually be cool. I bet with 100k labels he has some pretty interesting ones.
Yes, Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday, Tom. Keep the long / boring notes coming!
Happy birthday, Tom!
+1
Happy birthday Tom.
Happy Birthday Tom. Keep pulpiting—love reading the notes and thoughts!
Mike
If I’m not mistaken, Tom’s tasting notes were the first I ever read on a wine bulletin board back in 2000 and I always look forward to them. They’ve always been fresh/knowledgeable/detailed/informative/educational and never boring. How can you not love notes that compare a wine to Dolly Parton? Happy Birthday Tom!
