California’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards

Curious about the following: The Nachbaurs (who own Alegria Vineyards) told me that the Rafanelli family used to own part (or all?) of that property and that Dave was born in a house that once stood there. Would you happen to know what the timeline was surrounding the Rafanelli ownership of the property? I believe the Nachbaurs bought it in 1990, but who owned it in between?

This thread just came up on my Google Alerts, and I want to correct the Sausal Century Vines Zinfandel age. Sausal has an atlas from 1877 that shows the Century Vines block at that time. So we know they are at least 133 years old, but have no idea how old they truely are.

Great thread. Some of these I didn’t know about. [welldone.gif]

Welcome, Gretchen, and thanks for posting that. This is indeed one of the more interesting threads we’ve had . . . and your Century Vines are pretty impressive (from the Sausal website).

Excellent progress today in terms of formulating database parameters and working on the winery/grower questionnaire.

Got an email today from Will Bucklin, proprietor of the venerable “Old Hill Ranch” Vineyard, cheering us on!

I am very grateful for the CT database conceptualization being provided by Eric LeVine!

Hi Gretchen! Are you with Sausal? If so can you pm me? I’d like to forward our vineyard questionairre. Thanks!

Hi Mike,

Here is one more: Burnett Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley.
Planted Pre-Prohibition but unsure of exact date. Alderbrook used to receive the fruit until 2008.

Bryan

itb

For most of the nineties Cecil DeLoach made Vineyard Designates from Saitone, Gambogi, Papera, Barbieri and Pelletti Ranch with DeLoach Vineyards. In fact the first DeLoach wine was a 1975 Zinfandel from the Barbieri Ranch. Since then Hook and Ladder has made a Gambogi regularly and Saitone more irregulary.

DeLoach Vineyards starting in 2004 has worked with the Emmons/Riebli Vineyard off of Riebli Road in Sonoma County. Previous to that Topolos worked with the fruit. Vineyard is Zin/Petite Mix and is definitely pre-Prohibition, but not sure of the exact date.

Butler/Slazinski Vineyard off of Limerick Lane is another pre-Prohibition old vine vineyard. Predominately Zinfandel, but has Petite Sirah, Alicante, and Muscadine planted in the vineyard. DeLoach has been working with this vineyard since 2006.

DeLoach has been getting half of the Zinfandel off of Von Weidlich since 2008. The oldest blocks I believe were planted in 1905 (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah). The two most highly prized blocks were both planted in 1937. The remainder of the Zinfandel blocks were planted in the 1970’s. Ottimino and DeLoach have been splitting all the blocks.

We also work with a small amount of mix vines from Bill Nachbaur’s Alegria Vineyard, but have not yet bottled a single vineyard from it.

As far as the Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga goes, it was originally planted by Domenico Barberis in 1902 to mostly Petite Sirah. It was replanted during the 1950s and 1960s by his son Frank using cuttings from the vineyard. Carver Sutro now owns half of the original vineyard (the other half was replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon by Clos Pegase).

The Nova Vineyard up near Kelseyville is similar to this, with the original planting being prior to prohibition, but the current vines only dating to the mid 1960s, they’re also cuttings taken from the original plants.

Not sure how vineyards like this fit within the criteria.

DeLoach Vineyards

Here’s information on all of the Biale Vineyards. This info was provided by Jayme Silva who works for Biale.

The Biale Zinfandel Vineyards

Farming Zinfandel is a Biale family tradition that began in the old days of Napa. Today, Aldo Biale’s vineyard is one of several historic sites from which Robert Biale Vineyards produces some of the world’s finest Zinfandels.

Aldo’s Vineyard. Oak Knoll District. The old vines planted in 1937 on the Biale ranch in Napa that produce our signature wine.

Black Chicken. Oak Knoll and Napa. Named for the old code name for Aldo’s secret Zinfandel, younger vines behind Aldo’s home. 1980.

Grande Vineyard. Napa. Planted in 1920 on Silverado Trail. Named for the father of Dorothy Rossi and the grandfather of Tony Rossi.

Stagecoach Vineyards – The Biale Block. Napa Valley. The four acre Zinfandel site planted in 1999 at this acclaimed 500 acre ranch above Oakville.

Falleri Vineyard. Calistoga. Sonya Spencer’s one acre planted by her grandmother in 1924.

Valsecchi Vineyard. Carneros. Old vines near the town of Sonoma once farmed by Ron Mick’s grandfather John Valsecchi in 1900.

Monte Rosso Vineyard. Sonoma Valley. Legendary mountain vineyard farmed by the Martini family for three generations. 1885.

The Biale Winery Vineyard. Oak Knoll District. The estate vineyard surrounding the winery. 1999.

Collins Vineyard. St. Helena. Bill and Kathy Collins’ historic ranch planted on the rocky soil north of town near the Bale Mill in 1923.

Mead Ranch. Atlas Peak. Poet Jane Mead’s historic family mountain vineyard above Napa with a view of the North Bay. 1880.

Moore Vineyard. Napa Valley. Scenic historic vineyard preserved by Bill Moore near Coombsville in Napa along Hagen Road. 1905.

Tucker/Canard Ranch. Calistoga. Among Napa’s oldest vines, Rich “Duck” Czapleszki’s vineyard on Dunaweal Lane. 1880.

Mauritson Vineyard. Rockpile Appellation, Sonoma. Mountain vineyard high above Lake Sonoma farmed by fourth generation Mauritsons in this newly designated and acclaimed AVA. 2001.

Great thread! Zeni Vineyard date information - Edmeades’ website indicates it was planted in 1917. Other websites indicate either slightly older or much older (1850s):

http://www.truemendocinowine.com/Mariah-Vineyards.aspx

The CFR establishing the Mendocino Ridge AVA has some fun information on the vineyards in the area, but no specific date for Zeni.

Nice going with the database, Mike. Here are two I posted on a couple of days ago that got missed:

Marian’s Vineyard: St. Amant
Mohr-Fry Vineyard: St. Amant, Joel Gott, Eola Hills, Valhalla (I’m sure there are more too)

Thanks Ken!

BTW, I’ve recieved messages from a number of different sources and it is quite possible that other information has fallen through the cracks (I’m not a data gatherer/input guy by trade or experience). If the database has yet to repond to your message, please advise, as Ken has.

There’s a place called T.C. Vineyards up in Amador that was producing grapes in 1914, according to records. I think it’s like 14 acres.
Also, I see nothing about old vine vineyards in the Cienega Valley.

How could I forget Deaver Vineyard…

A drive over Deaver’s 300 acres will take you past 120-year-old Zinfindel vines and eight acres of Mission vines, so called because they were brought from Mexico by the Jesuits and Franciscans. The Deaver mission vines were planted around 1853 by Ken Deaver’s great grandfather John A. Davis. His son, Ken’s grandfather, planted the Zinfandel four decades later. For years, the Deaver’s “old vine” grapes were sold exclusively to home winemakers. The first vintage of Deaver Vineyards Zinfandel was bottled under the “Lakeshore” label in 1985.

Obviously this leaves out the history including Sutter Home’s work with Deaver fruit.

Haven’t seen a single mention of my “next door” neighbor, Luvisi Vineyards. Cousin to Frediani - neither Frediani nor Luvisi produces commercial wines. But I do think Signorello has or does make a Zin from Luvisi fruit, and Tony Soter was making a field blend that included fruit from both Frediani and Luvisi under the name of “Fortitude,” but I believe they are no longer going forward with that project. Someone who has time should fact-check what I just said - I pulled this from memory/local lore.

But I think the sale to home winemakers was only a small outlet for his grapes. Ken Sr., as did JohnDowning, fed a lot of his grapes to his pigs is my understanding.
The quality of Ken’s pork chops was legendary in the area.
CharlieMeyer’s (now HarborWnry) Ho-made Zin from Ken’s grapes was the wine that inspired DarrellCorti to suggest to BobTrinchero that he try Deaver grapes.
The rest is history.

Legendary pork chops? This excercise just gets more and more intriguing!!!
