California’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards

Yup. The next vineyard discussed in Rhoda Stewart’s book was the “Valle Rossi Vineyard”.

In the decades following Prohibition, Sebastiani, a few home winemakers, and Julius Pagani’s Kenwood Winery bought grapes from Val Rossi. Next, Seghesio purchased his vineyard’s fruit (only for 6 six years), and Gallo after that.

By the early '90s, it appears that Topolos got all of the “Rossi” grapes.

“‘…I don’t have much Alicante left, but during Prohibition, we had enough to ship back East in boxes…Today, just Pagani, me, and Uboldi still have old Alicante vines’.”

Therefore, it appears that “Uboldi” was St Francis’ source for extra Alicante Bouschet.
