Cagliari + 2001 Soldera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

I took my wife to Cagliari for the weekend for her birthday. I booked at Dal Corsaro. I had no idea what the restaurant would bring in terms of quality, creativity, etc. basically googled “best restaurant Cagliari” and called the first one on the search.

The food was sensational. I’ve been going to Sardinia annually for 6 years and this is the best I’ve found on the island. Not to be missed.

Now the wine.

Very very good. Morelo cherries, réglisse and a big handful of herbs. Oregano was the most pronounced. I never would have id’d it without all of the fresh micro herbs that were on the plates. Drinking this wine with fresh oregano is like a Silvio Berlusconi party…lots of dynamics and plenty of fireworks. Tannin was massive but pure silk. The wine will live a lifetime and will continue to drink youthfully for another 10 years before any secondary characters are at the forefront.

Great occasion, great food, great wine.

If anyone’s interested the set menu is €60 and the wine was (a very sage) €220. I can recommend a delightful B&B that is 20 meters from the restaurant if anyone plans to go.

I had outstanding food in Cagliari, so the best in Cagliari is quite a recommendtion!

My favorite was fried sea anenome. It wasn’t on the menu, a local at a wine bar recommended the place and wrote down what I should order.

When I asked the waiter, he said “how do you know to order that”! Absolutely amazing (and light intthe way the best Italian fritti is).

Funnily I had those fried critters in July when we were there for our month holiday. It was a first for me then. They’re certainly a well guarded secret!

In all honesty the food at Dal Corsaro was stunning. It was innovative without ever losing sight of tradition. And the food was extremely digestible. None of the portions were too big, not too much pasta, lots of herbs and veg. Really a delightfully well balanced menu.

I have plenty of other tips should anyone ever want some ideas for the southern part of the island. My wife is half Sardinian and we spend a month of each of our years down there.

Cheers
