Burgundy winemakers similar in style to Arnoux-Lachaux?

A couple of friends and I are going to Burgundy this fall and, unfortunately, our all-time favorite domaine are unable to host us this time meaning we would like to “discover” another one like it. What we really like about A-L is the concentration and overall style so I’m hoping for a couple of suggestions for winemakers that fit the description, preferably with village and/or 1er cru holdings in Chambolle/Vosne/NSG. What are your thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated! [cheers.gif]

Very hard - i honestly think that Charles is making some of the best wines on the Côte de Nuits just now - his Nuits are as good as his Vosnes. You can always pay more and try Comte Liger-Belair and DRC, but really AL together with Gerard Mugneret have the best quality/value in Vosne just now. The latter with less stems and a hint more overt oak…

We need that great chart again showing where all the burg domaines fit in terms of modern vs classical!

It is very difficult to name a producer with a style smilar to A-L … which is not only high lass but very individual …
Other Domaines in Vosne I would recommend to visit:
Bruno Clavelier (just opposite A-L),
Michel Gros (I know he doesn´t receive very much love here, but I´m always very satisfied with what he makes …)
Mugneret-Gibourg
Domaine Cathiard (former Sylvain, now Sebastian)

Thank you for these suggestions! Are there any in particular you would recommend, whose style is leaning towards the more “modern” winemaking? Or one whose wines have a particularly good QPR?

YES! [winner.gif] Where can I find this?

Most modern IMHO is Cathiard, but definitely no bargain (and hard to find).
I wouldn´t call Michel Gros “modern”, but he uses a quite distictive kind of oak … his Vosnes Brulees and Clos des Reas are always fine (and shouldn´t be extremely pricy). The “bargain” is IMHO the Chambolle-Musigny Village.
Bruno Clavelier has a very pure straight-foreward style - with very little makers signature …
Mugneret-Gibourg: quite intense style - for me slightly heavy and lacking in elegance, but there are many great fans of the sisters here …

Yes! There is an intense red cherry signature that I’m not crazy about. I thought I was the only one who wasn’t crazy about M-G.

Back to the OP. Hudelot Noellat is a little less expensive and recently the wines are probably just as good as Arnoux with the exception of the Suchots.

Shhh…keep quiet about HN!

I definitely think that one needs to strongly mark the Charles vs Pascal era at Arnoux-Lachaux. Charles is using increasing amounts of whole cluster, and is expressly making a more taut and not as confectionary of a style as his father. I whole heartedly agree with Bill that his NSG wines are outstanding, only suffering from consumer label bias. I would also add that there is increasing even quality throughout the range, including villages level wines. Charles is rising to the occasion and then some, one of the most “serious” young talents in Burgundy.
I can’t help you with visit advice, Kristoffer. Things are crazy these days in Burgundy, sooooo many passionate visitors.
Disclaimer: I import Arnoux, Gerard Mugneret, Mugneret Gibourg, Clavelier, Hudelot Noellat.
Commercial disclaimer: 2014 Arnoux offer to come out in a few weeks…

No bias against NSG here!

I dunno if I can recommend an equivalent style elsewhere but fwiw the best-kept secret in the Arnoux portfolio is the Clos des Corvees Pagets.

Your wish is my command.

I agree with a big “shhhh…” [cheers.gif]

My only bias against NSG is the fact that they need a lot of time in the bottle, longer than most Vosnes, before they give me real satisfaction. I´m definitely against drinking cases of NSG too young because they are “soooo goood …” now. [wow.gif]
(nothing against the NSGs of A-L … very fine)

Hudelot-Nöellat duly noted - I’ve just reached out to them hoping for an appointment this fall. I’m excited to hear about the A-L Corvées Pagets as I haven’t tasted it, but was lucky enough to buy some '12s from Florence at the domaine last year.

This has been a great help, many thanks to all of you. I’ll be sure to report back once home from our Alsace-Bourgogne-Champagne roadtrip. [cheers.gif]
