No whites or blind games?
Very cool!
No whites or blind games?
Very cool!
Perhaps they were only making plans for Nigel?
I’m waiting for someone to ask who I really am when I visit a place. Watch out.
I visited once. Meant more to me than going to the Vatican. B. Noblet was in great form and I tasted 99s out of barrel. Cost me a lot of money after that as I went on a national search for all I could find, still the greatest vintage I’ve tasted. We were blind tasted on 2 reds and I did guess Richebourg correctly. Missed by a decade, though. A 65 RC was incredible from a suck vintage and of course we all guessed the white to be Batard. You brought back great memories. Of course we had no Colin so it could have been better.
Great motes , thanks a lot . My last visit was with Bernard Noblet and with a friend from Singapore …. Who correctly identified all the wines blind , all 5 of them .
When I asked Bernard what he would do with the 5 bottles he opened for us , he said he would normally drink it over lunch with his colleagues . But then he offered them to us and we had them during dinner that evening …
that’s crazy.
What a nice visit and tasting all those. I’m hoping someday I’ll make it to that Holy Grail.
the DRC visit recap is one of the best posts I’ve seen on here, elegant humor and a surprising symmetry to the writing, with the mentions of Colin evoking Chekhov’s gun. bravo
The wines Alan , not the years .
still impressive.
So did he guess…“this is a DRC” on all five?
no, “red, white.”
It was lovely to reconnect with Sylvie and Thomas Morey again. The expansion and renovation of their cellars continues and one can sense just how beautiful the cellar space will be on completion. The courtyard and garden were looking a treat on the fine spring day we visited. Thomas took us through his lineup of 2020 whites. They were every bit as good as we had hoped, coming from this wonderful vintage. His wines are pure and elegant, with real tension and focus.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Bourgogne Blanc: It comes off five parcels within Chassagne. It is aged 50% in oak and 50% stainless. The nose has exquisite white peach, fresh lemons and a whiff of flint. The palate has great volume and richness for its level with a finish that is fresh and persistent. It is so good now but has the stuffing to age for five years.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Saint-Aubin Blanc: The nose draws you in with lemon scents and citrus blossom. It has richness of fruit in the mouth, but also mineral tension. Nicely balanced and absolutely delicious.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Saint-Aubin Le Puits Blanc: This has intense lemon and white peach fruits. It is unctuous, dense and linear, with good structure and a dry, sappy finish. Should age really well.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet: There are white peach and nectarine fruits here cut with grapefruit. It has excellent depth and richness for its level and is very long. Really good Village wine.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes: White flowers and white peach greet the nose. It is a delicate wine, with a fine line of minerally acidity. It is transparent balanced and light spice notes linger on the finish.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles: There’s a whiff of toast and ripe peach and nectarine fruits. It is full and sappy, drawing into a fresh closure of lemon and mineral. Good shape and persistence.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines: Pure white peach with some aniseed spice. Unctuous, rich fruits overlay a mineral base. Great volume and drive.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées: Very mineral with some orchard fruit complexity. It slowly builds through the palate and is contained and compact. It has fabulous length and purity and should be a beauty given some cellar time.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot: Rich, broad, unctuous and with Morgeot’s muscle but everything is in check. Intense, with excellent length.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse: A shy nose of white flowers and lemon. An explosive palate of intense, sappy orchard fruits. Really chalky, great chew to the long finish.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Dent de Chien: Has notes of lemon butter and pure white peach. It is linear, powerful and very long. This is the last vintage for a while, as 2021 was destroyed by frost and then the vineyard was ripped up to be replanted.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière: A wine of finesse and fruit intensity. Has white peach and spiced pear flavours. There’s minerally tension and wonderful shape and clarity. Flavours linger for a long time.
2020 Domaine Thomas Morey Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: Complex, layered, explosive and fresh. Has some spearmint cream, white peach, lemon and white flowers. It is deep but light on its feet. The finish is precise and it is a wine of great drive, authority and length. Superb!
Thomas Morey is one of my top favorites. I purchased as a future many of these wines from 2020. So happy to see these notes. Top producer!
Cheers Don. You will be happy with the wines.
Thanks for the report, Jeremy. I bit the bullet a few weeks ago and preordered a half case of the Puligny Truffiere and a half case of the Santenay Clos Rousseau rouge. Looking forward to them and hopefully a few more in smaller quantities on release. But US distribution and availability are not what they used to be back in Bernard’s day.
I really like the wines of Domaine Michel Rebourgeon. They have vineyards with considerable vine age. They are certainly expressive of their terroirs and extraction is gentle. There’s good fruit purity and depth of flavour. Their 2020s are absolute crackers. Stephen and William Whitehead were kind enough to take us through their latest releases. The have moved their tasting area to street level in Pommard and I can heartily recommend a visit here.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Bourgogne Rouge: Made from organically grown grapes under Pommard next to La Vache. Only 3000 bottles made in ’20 and it is a beauty. There are red and black fruit aromas and flavours. It has a creamy richness coupled with minerally energy. Balance is excellent.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Beaune 1er Cru Chouacheux: This is ripe, generous and expressive. There are blood-plum notes and some sarsaparilla root. It is fleshy, voluminous and layered with a bright, energetic finish that expands out.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle: The nose is full of red berry and black cherry fruits. It is luscious and layered in the mouth. There’s something stony and cool lurking. It has engaging florals. great detail and poise. Its long finish is laced with minerals.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards: Richly-fruited, dark and brooding. Flesh over a chalky base. Good muscle and drive. Finishes with real authority. Some terrific material here upon which to age.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Pommard Les Trois Terroirs: A touch of floral spice from a portion of whole bunch. The fruit is bright and of the cherry persuasion. It is relatively supple, with gentle extraction. A lovely perfumed Pommard, that has a gentle flex of muscle to the back end.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Pommard Les Perrières: Off 95-year-old vines. This is deep and luscious, with creamy dark fruits and loads of spice. It is dense and sappy, with a chalky base buried well below the flesh. It has ample structure and great length of flavour.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Pommard Les Noizons: A 0.3ha plot within Noizons planted in 1939. This is next to Charmots and only three barrels were made. The nose is engaging with raspberry and spiced- plum fruits and a touch of ginger. It is layered with flavour and has perfectly ripe tannins carrying the finish on and on. Delicious now, should be something special in a decade.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Pommard 1er Cru Les Charmots: This vineyard is so stony and there is no access by tractor; everything is done by hand. It was super-low yielding in 2020 so the Rebourgeon team decided to bottle in magnum only. Just 150 magnums produced. It is a deep wine, with intense cherry, red berry and liquorice aromas and flavours. It has a creamy mid-palate and great mineral detail. It is bright and energetic with superb persistence.
2020 Michel Rebourgeon Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens: This has such a deep, saturated colour. It is loaded with dark cherry and blackberry fruits. There’s some iron and soot. It is super-rich and a real powerhouse, but there are elements of floral beauty. Balance is superb and the finish oh so long and energetic.
great reporting, jh, appreciated.
Thanks, Jeremy. Timely, as an offer on a couple of his 20s just hit my inbox a bit ago.
Good stuff, Jeremy. I believe that you have imported their wines for many years, which is wonderful. They deserve broader recognition.
Indeed, the old vines afford wines of undeniable deep substance. I bought a third of the single barrel of Pezerolles '20, the swan song vintage for those 100 year old vines before being torn out. Exceptional finesse…I imagine that is why you didn’t taste it, all gone…
I offered the 2020s a few months ago, with some availability still.
They bottled the Charmots 20 in Magnum only. Did you taste that one? It was very very impressive put of barrel.
Edit- duh, I see your Charmots '20 note…yup, sounds like it was showing even better for you than me last November…
