Burgundy glass help Zalto vs Grassl

IMO, GGG and Josephine both work quite well for pinot noir and nebbiolo. So do Zalto and Grassl, but I wouldn’t expect massive performance improvement over what you already have, which are very nice glasses.

To be honest, I just use Reidel Vinum restaurant series burgundy bowls for pinot and nebbiolo. The fancy glasses give you a slightly better experience (favoring the GGG or sensory), but for me it just isn’t worth the washing, storage, breakage hassle. The restaurant series glasses are $8 a stem, so breaking one, or having someone walk off with one (these things happen maybe once a year) is not big deal, and there’s a consistency to using the same glasses all the time that gives you a common denominator (with the other glasses, I would find that I would be switching back and forth).

First time I used mine I poured a glass just by eyeing the amount and quickly realized I had half a bottle in that glass.

Conterno sensory glasses are superior IMHO but maybe harder to find. Several top end burg producers insist that brokers use them at tastings

They’re designed for mags or larger.

Having just moved last Friday, I was surprised to find that I had a Zalto Burgundy stem new and tucked away. I am down to one Grassl Cru, so it is nice to have 2 stems to use and share when I open a nice bottle of Pinot.

I’ll echo the post upstream that the Zaltos are fragile - I thought I had broken all of them.

I use the Grassl Liberte stems pretty exclusively now.

I have a number of Liberte and Mineralite.

I use the Mineralite for bubbles.

You and @David_Baum will get Zalto Universals and you’ll like it !

Broke way too many of them!!

Although I really like the Grassl Cru for red Burgundy, new world pinot noir, and grenache dominated wines, when I have a line-up of bottles and I’m doing tasting sized pours I prefer the Grassl Liberte for the smaller volume. I think the Liberte is just as good for these smaller pours for those wines as is a larger pour in the larger Cru.

Thankyou all so much. Seems like the Zalto really is delicate and fragile.
I have just heard about Corterno Sensory glass from you guys and looks like it got a lot of love. Sadly the only wine shop that carries it (in my country, that I know of) ran out of stock, will try asking other shops.

Have to put in another vote for the Corterno Sensory glass. I used to use the Zalto burgundy, definitely prefer the Conterno.

Conterno Sensory for Burgundy is as good as it gets. Thrilled to see so many here agree.

For those put off by the Sensory price, at 1/2 the cost, the GV Prestige is the very next best.

I use it for everything, sparkling wines shine in it. They are a large bowl though, some people like my wife, don’t like it for that reason.

I’ve never used grassl, but I will just echo that Zalto Burgundy is ridiculously delicate. Cleaning them out is such a pain with their super broad bowl and tiny opening to stick your cleaning cloth into. And I didn’t even think the experience of drinking out of them was all that great. If you can’t tell, I’m not a fan. Their Universal is better but still too expensive and fragile to warrant a rebuy when I inevitably break the final one I have left.

Grassl Cru is my favorite glass though I typically use it only for pinot and Nebbiolo. I like everything about it. I also have the Zalto burgundy, which I like and use a lot less. I find the wide bowl to be unwieldy and, as many others have said, hard to wash. I also don’t find any performance improvement of the wide bowl over the Grassl Cru - if anything I think the Cru shows better.

One comment that hasn’t yet been made is if you lean toward Zalto check out the Spieglau Definitions. They are an exact clone of Zalto for less than half the price. I have them intermixed in the glassware cabinet and have to look for the etching to tell them apart. Unfortunately, their Burgundy glass is the Zalto Burgundy shape, which I don’t prefer, but the Bordeaux and Universal glasses are great.
