Anyone else find them kind of sad? I always wonder what the story is behind someone getting rid of so many great bottles of wine lovingly collected over the years. I figure most of the time it is a death or extreme financial hardship. Nice to have access to well stored wines with some age on them…but still a bit sad.

Hmmm…besides what Claude said, I would like to add the following comments :

(1) wrong guess that your beloved g-crus wines may never turned around ; and

(2) they are collectors’ bottles and then there were burgundy-lovers bottles;

That was what I did with my Parker 100 points Bord : 90 Margaux and 89 HB.

A lot of wine drinkers, particularly those with lots of crazy money, went on a decade long orgy of wine buying, right up until the economy went bad. I’ve never understood where they stored all those bottles, so I don’t find it particularly surprising that some selling is going on. I certainly don’t try to imagine sad scenarios; if someone went from really, really rich to less well-off, well, too bad, so sad, I guess (so sue me).

This actually is fairly common. Many of my consignors have simply bought more wine than they could ever drink in 5 lifetimes, so need to thin out. These are typically guys who have cemented extremely good relationships with retailers and importers that they are afraid to stop buying, as they don’t want to ever lose access to buying the highly allocated wines.

This actually is fairly common. Many of my consignors have simply bought more wine than they could ever drink in 5 lifetimes, so need to thin out. These are typically guys who have cemented extremely good relationships with retailers and importers that they are afraid to stop buying, as they don’t want to ever lose access to buying the highly allocated wines.

What if someone’s kid’s school loans come due and he/she wanted to help out? They have a glut of wine they bought too much of, would never finish so they sold some off for quick cash to help their son/daughter.

Don’t feel bad for ppl selling off burgundy cellars, look at it on the positive side, we get to buy well stored burgundy at decent prices

I just bought some wine from a retailer and guessed whose cellar it came from. It is a mutual acquaintance whom I know was having health problems at one time, it did make me worry. I was happy to get it though, as I knew it had been well cared for and purchased when I was in graduate school and couldn’t afford to buy that much.
