Burgundy and Champagne

  • 1996 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (10/19/2014)
Just a little more developed than some of the recent bottles I have had but still really good. Has a little toast and mushroom on the nose along with bright citrus fruits, bread and mineral. It is dense, chalky and piercing in the mouth with so much power yet supreme elegance. It really breathes up in the glass and is a Champagne of terrific authority and class.
  • 1999 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill - France, Champagne (10/19/2014)
Drinking really well. Just starting to take on some nutty/toasty development. Has good depth of citrus and peach fruit. It is fine and elegant yet has good power filling the mouth with a pleasant combination of fruit and yeast flavours. It has really good focus to the finish and is very long.
  • 2002 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet (10/19/2014)
Drinking well. Has some toast and brulee development but certainly within tolerances. Peach fruit is ripe and sappy and there’s a fleck of mineral through the finish. Length is good for its level.
  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill - France, Champagne (10/19/2014)
Fresh, vibrant aromas of lemon, baker’s yeast and mineral. It is direct yet elegant and has nice depth of fruit and excellent detail. Bead is fine and mousse exceptionally creamy. It finishes with good cut and is very persistent. Lovely Champers.
  • 2003 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (10/19/2014)
As black as the ace of spades. Deeply pitched and full of dark, sooty notes coupled with dense liqueur cherry fruit. It is a powerful, concentrated wine with a Rhone-like flavor profile. It is quite atypical but very good and the Domaine’s usual structure suits the vintage well giving good energy to the finish.
  • 2008 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des Ambres - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault (10/19/2014)
Has a big whiff of struck match to the aroma. Fruit is crisp, clear and crunchy. There’s a dollop of almond butter and the wine has 1er Cru richness and intensity. It has great mineral/citrus cut and leaves a real chalky calling card once swallowed. Fabulous!

Hi Jeremy,

Agree 100% on the Salon and the Churchill, both of which I greatly enjoyed this year!

Thanks for the note on the Ente Ambres - I have not yet tried the wine, but read great things, so I ordered some bottles of the 2011 from a recent sale at Zachy’s. It is expensive for a village wine, but as you say, most seem to think it has the class of a 1er Cru.

Cheers,
Blair

Thanks for the notes. I really like Gouges 03’s.

Nice notes.

Ramonet’s 2002 village Puligny is pretty good too.

Best,

N

nice to see someone drinking well.
