Peter, you are probably right, I read the Gilman report, not BH and but the impressions are alike. But I got married in 2013 so I do want some great bottles for 25 years later…
As usual Peter is spot on. First with new technology and commitment to quality the days of wash out vintages are probably behind us. That being said I did not get the feeling that Meadows or Robinson for that matter like this vintage as much as 12 and certainly not close to 10 or 05. There were certainly some highs though like Rousseau and DRC.
I have read Burghound, Neil Martin, Claude Kolm and Sarah Marsh so far. Kolm appeared most enthusiastic in giving out points. Others were more guarded. Marsh assesses like Coates (her mentor) i.e. with in the context of the vintage.
Its a vintage I will think twice (or thrice) before buying. Especially now that I have dropped off buying Rousseau which was my only must have producer, I don’t feel the compulsion to buy any others. In the end, I will probably end up buying some but I would not lose sleep over not getting any.
I did backfill few which I post on another thread.
Any impressions of the 2013 Faiveley Corton, Mazis or Latricieres? The BH reviews seemed strong and PC over the weekend in their broadcast email had great prices (all under $120). Probably shouldn’t have passed on the Cazetiers at $70 but tried to be restrained. Wasn’t planning on buying any 13s but couldn’t help it given the prices (Faiveley Corton has to be one of the best steals in Burgundy at $99).
Not impressed by Faiveley this year but only had Echezeaux and Latricieres. Don’t understand how one can find Corton at 99 US$ as, usually, US much more expensive than Europe
I tasted the Faiveley wines the same week as Allen Meadows and found them really good. Corton is big as usual and will need some time to come around. I found Mazis-Chambertin very fresh and almost as great as Clos de Béze. Latricieres is as always a bit anonymous. Cazetiers is superb and for me a must buy in every vintage.
I tried the faiveley clos corton and latricieres at 2 different tastings. Clos cortons was very classy. Latricieres was nice but a bit subdued. I adored the cazetiers last year but felt it was also a bit subdued this year.
Concerning Meadows’ assessment of the vintage, which I read carefully and found very useful and clearly spelled out, I noticed the following:
he puts 2013 below 2009, 10 and 12 in terms of quality, but above 2011 among others.
Going back to Issue 49, where he described the 2011 vintage, I read that he put this below 2010 but above 2009.
No, I will not lose sleep over this, just pointing this out.
Thanks for the comments - glad to hear they have a pretty good vintage for 2013. I guess I should have bought some Cazetiers and perhaps not the Latricieres…
Must say that, for various reasons, I like all vintages since 2004 (and jury still out on this one)…s no worry. Have decided to cut purchases in 2013 both because of age and prices… but still buying a little bit (if allocated).
