Burg vs Goodfellow Dinner with Marcus and Megan

@Marcus_Goodfellow and @Megan_Joy were kind enough to dig deep in their reserves to pull some special bottles for a fun side by side. Favorite flight was the whites - they were both just firing on all cylinders. It was a great time as always with them - such a deep well of experience and information. But I would have felt better this morning if the 4 of us didn’t empty just about all 7 bottles!

BURG VS GOODFELLOW WITH MARCUS AND MEGAN - (8/30/2026)

Opener

BdN

2014 Chardonnay

  • 2014 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Richard's Cuvee - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
PnP. Still extremely fresh on first pour and opened up with time in the glass. Beautiful wine with all the goods and fully integrated. In a great spot now but no hurry. Stood tall next to the '14 Lafon Charmes. Softer vintage in OR with less limestone soil, but this has good chiseling and acid backbone and both were supremely enjoyable to drink.
  • 2014 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Decant 3 hours. Needed all that air time to settle down as so many '14s do right now. Beautiful texture with the classic Charmes approachable character and softly present minerality.

2012 Pinot

  • 2012 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Decant 30 minutes. Purple fruits and spice notes. In a great drinking zone right now. Continued to open with air and gather weight. A very well made wine that showed beautifully next to the '12 Dujac Malconsorts.
  • 2012 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Open 2 hours. Classic stems and Vosne spice on the nose. Palate is soft and integrated, but still has a slight, but noticeable reduction present. Nice texture and much more open for business than the Charmes was a couple of years ago.

Just wrapping up tonight, it’s been a whirlwind of a week. It was fantastic to get a quiet evening to eat and talk and share some rellay exceptional bottles of wine. I’mabsolutely in agreement with you that this morning would have been more pleasant if I had exercised a bit of restraint, but the wines were all on point and it was really fun to go back and forth between them.

My favorite flight was also the whites. No shade on the bubbles or the Pinot Noirs but both of the 2014 Chardonnays were showing extremely well. Both wines were very true to their region but also had quite a lot in common. The layering and movement on both, as well as texture were more similar than not. Both wines had a good sensibility and balance.

The Bouchard bubbles were also really deftly done. I think that I drank most of that wine. It was quietly very delicious. Lovely range and movement. I’m looking forward to the day when our bubbles have settled down for a couple of years post disgorgement, but I also feel like the Goodfellow bubbles were a great indicator of where we are headed and the potential quality of Oregon sparkling wine.

The Pinot Noirs were a lovely comparison and contrast of whole cluster Pinot Noirs and both showed very well. I am falling short on my thoughts for these wines as this morning began early and we have two more sparkling picks tomorrow morning. As well as filling barrels with the juice of the two last picks.

Most of all, last night was a lovely meal and ai hope that we’ll see you back out here again.

Very cool. I’ve always wanted to try Goodfellow Pinot’s next to Dujac. I will do so one day.
Marcus, how much was Dujac an influence on your red winemaking style when you were getting started? I guess it’s an obvious quesiton given their wholecluster use, but there are others.

Josh,

Steve Doerner at Cristom was a huge influence on my winemaking style. His Pinot Noirs in the early 90s from the Willamette Valley set the bar, in my opinion. Though there were definitely other excellent wines being made as well.

But Dujac was a very big influence on Steve. Two other mentors of mine in wine, one in prodiction and one in retail also did harvests at Dujac, and I loved the wines. Most of my day to day experience came from Steve as he was close by and very open with his thoughts. I learned a lot from other people but I apply more of what I gained from Steve than anyone else.
