Building a subterranean wine cellar/root cellar

That’s amazing. I hope one day I can have a wine cellar!

Is there a better project to follow than this? You should write a short book, “What I did during the pandemic”…

Remarkable. The neighbours must be thinking “that’s going to be a really deep pool” Or a bomb shelter.

I know I would be hiring out the cinder block work …

That’s still a distinct possibility. I’m a quick learner though. We’ll see.

Hiring out moving 10 tons of gravel might also have been cheaper than the chiropractor you’ll be booking this week.

Took last weekend off and flew down to see my Father who passed away Monday. RIP!

If I do this for three days in a row I may end up in traction. Moved the mortar and concrete blocks from the driveway to the back yard. Then I proceeded to build a wall around what will eventually be the stairs and entrance to the cellar. I may be hiring out for the cellar walls. We’ll see how my masonry skills progress over the weekend. Boy is my back sore.

Sorry for your loss!
Would it not have been quicker/easier/less costly to have poured more of the walls, as it looks looks like you will be grouting the block anyways?

Sorry about your Dad! May he RIP.
Get some help Brian. Your back and health are worth it. During these times you need to stay away from hospitals if at all possible.

Sorry to hear about your dad Brian, but it’s nice to hear you managed to spend a bit of time with him at the end. Hopefully it was as painless and comfortable as possible. RIP

Quicker, easier, 5x the cost.

Thanks for the kind words guys. We were together as a family for his final 3 days, it really boosted him for a time. He passed quietly in his sleep.

Is there a better end to this life we have? I wonder if it is a blessing to have a project like this to work on during a time of reflection. Kind of like a memorial to your dad…

You know, I’ve been thinking of the same thing. How to incorporate his memory into this project. It’ll give me something to think about while I toil through it.
