Bottle recs in Burnos Aires

True. Victor knows I really don’t like all that flowery nonsense in Torrontes but he did explain they are not all equal. Susana Balbo is probably the queen of this grape. Los Dragones is another interesting one.

Has anyone tried 1853 The Wine Experience around the corner from San Telmo Market? It looked very promising. I just started chatting with one of the employees when our ride showed up, so I couldn’t actually purchase anything.

I haven’t been there. Tried the website but it won’t let me in. Looks pretty good from what I could see. Basically there are three different types of wine stores there.

1, the ones that carry the cool mierda. The major differences here will be the number of labels and prices but they’re all more or less carrying what is currently hip. The better stores will have the more allocated things.

2, Generic wine stores selling industrial scale wine and hard liquor. Stay away except for hard liquor as they can have good pricing on that.

3, “Chinos” aka supermarkets run by Chinese immigrants. Usually not the greatest wines but if you know what’s you’re looking for some diamonds in the rough can turn up with good/very good pricing.

That reminds me of another old school winery: Colomé. I once found their Lote Especial Pinot Noir in a Chino. Loaded the proverbial truck and cleaned them out.

Here’s an example of a good store that has high prices. Chacra 32 now going for ~US$320. No thank you.

You’re staying right next to Piegari, which is great for a meal.

I lived on that block from 2013-2015. Enjoy!
