I always found that 89 had better balance and acidity to go with the fruit than 90 in a general sense which gave them a bit more tension and structure, where the first taste of 90 was always fruit driven but still balanced with more underlying structure vs. overt structure. Two really great vintages.

You can’t really defend that 89 or 90 is better. There are a bunch of wines that support either assertion, and then there are those like Lynch Bages and Pichon Baron where any given tasting might pick a different winner. There are notable misses as well as amazing wines in both vintages, including 1st Growths.
I suspect 19 and 20 will be like this, but hopefully without the misses.
