Blizzard Notes: 2006 Shafer Hillside, 1985 Krug Cabernet, 2003 Arcadian Syrah Hommage Max

Snowed in up in CT, so time to post some notes from the past few days with family…

  • 2006 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District (12/27/2010)
DEcanted two hours, needed more. Very big young California Cabernet. Rich dark fruit, cedar notes, some black licorice. Long, long finish. Big, heavily fruited wine that really needs some time to shine. 14.9% abv. [/i]
  • 1985 Charles Krug Winery (Peter Mondavi Family) Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/25/2010)
Cork was soaked through and came out in two piece. Bottle was in great shape with excellent fill. Maintained a deep red fruit color, just some slight browning at the top. Appears quite young. Palate shows some tired madeirized fruit notes, but bits of tar and dankness. Really not bad for its age, but perhaps better years ago. Nice for the history.
  • 2003 Arcadian Syrah Hommage à Max - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (12/24/2010)
Did not decant (should have) but opened an hour before serving. Some bacon adn smoke on the nose. Still a seemingly primary fruit on the palate. Rich and chewy dark fruit. Just a whisp of peppery spice and slight earthiness. Ready to drink in the sense that the tannins have moved to the background; yet, I think there are more interesting days ahead for this. Good, but did not blow me away.][/i]
  • 2005 La Rasina Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (12/22/2010)
Rather young and tannic. Tart young cherry and tarry, tobacco notes. Leathery and tight, but tasty, too. I like it, but it needs time. __
