The New Face of Blaufränkisch—
Austrian growers visit NYC on January 15th from 3-6pm
Winemakers pouring will be:
Paul Achs
Dorli Muhr from Muhr-van der Niepoort
Silvia Prieler
Uwe Schiefer
Josef Umathum
Roland Velich of Moric
special guest David Schildknecht will be there as well.
This is a trade tasting, but we have space for a few Blaufrankisch enthusiasts on a first-respond basis. Invitation only, so please PM/email me and I can get you the information as well as put your name on the list.
To be clear on commercial interests, this is not a Winemonger event-
there are two growers whose wines I sell involved,
but also growers represented by Skurnik, Winebow, Martine’s and Weygandt-Metzler
an interesting opportunity to get to know a wine that’s really come out of nowhere…
best regards,
James
James,
Do you know if they are coming to the southern California area?
no, not this group. It’s the East Coast USA cousin of a presentation David did in Burgenland last summer.
it got timed to coincide with useful work by the individual growers for their respective import companies…
but I know that Austrian Wine Marketing has a really big show planned for CA in May… so stay tuned.
best regards.
Sounds like a very cool tasting. I look forward to notes.
Awesome. Would love to be able to go. Please post some notes.
James,
If you have the time, please post notes. I’ve only had the opportunity to try Achs & Prieler on that list, but I’d definitely like to get a better feel on where things are headed.
things are headed in a number of different directions. Consensus seems to indicate that at its best Blaufränkisch can be as expressive of origin as pinot noir or nebbiolo—
and the general result of this is that the wines have in the last couple years become more Europaisch and less Kalifornisch in style…
