Bird-related Wine Corks!

Hi Gila, you’re welcome!

I’ll have to find it.

Do you have anything from Kestrel in Washington State?

I am so happy that this most wholesome thread is still going

Dearest, dearest Brian!

You’re an angel out of nowhere! I had strayed from my bird cork mission, but your astonishing bounty has reignited my fire. I am revisiting the Berserker site and catching up. A quick eyeball of the corks you sent have me so excited. I will “curate” them and do a write-up and post it. May take a while… the holiday foolishness has begun and people refuse to recognize the importance of bird corks over all else.
Brian, what’s your handle/ID on the site? I’m disoriented. Plus it seems they’ve ‘improved’ the messages and I’m slow to figure stuff out

Thank you, again, and again.

My email is everybodysheardaboutthebird@yahoo.com.

Brandon. yes indeed, I do have some variations of that kestrel. isn’t is lovely?

Here are the latest fugitives from Brian Curtis’ wine estate. After a good look-see, I determine that I have the first three; the next three are new to me. Quite a feat Bran: I already have hundreds! I treasure the duplicates and celebrate the surprises, believe me.
Here are some review notes on the ones I have already collected…
Within a couple of days, I’ll unveil my research on the new ones. A teaser: Ocelli’s cork (#6) has one of the most enchanting little hidden hidden in the cork design EVER

Brian Curtis Collection
2025
I already had the first three, but duplicates are treasured for various reasons.
The final three were new to me. That’s a real accomplishment, Brian ----I have hundreds of corks and rarely get surprised .

Suzor
French heritage right here in L’Amerique (Oregon). Let me start with their site - https://www.suzorwines.com/
Brian Tuite, and others, thanks for the original heads-ups. Just a taste from their site… “Suzor’s “The Tower” is Oregon Pinot Noir at its precision-balanced, Burgundy-inspired best.— Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier". So they’re the real deal, not just a pretty cork. Many more reviews where that came from.
Their site is so rich with education, family heritage, and happy energy… There’s Grandmother Suzor, pictured with a lovely little male Pied Cockatiel (if I’m correct). I’m told that this was the inspiration for the cork’s jauntily-crested little bird. I love it.

Domaine Serene

This story needs to be a movie… like maybe in the 1950s, with Joan Crawford and… how about Joseph Cotten…?
From their gorgeous Hollywood Regency site: “An American Dream Grace and Ken Evenstad first arrived and settled in the Dundee Hills in the Willamette Valley in 1989. At that time, the couple had spent over 20 years together in Minnesota building a successful business, a loving family, and a deep appreciation for the wines of Burgundy. The Evenstads had faith in Oregon early on, before there was a national market for domestic Pinot Noir. When the time came to pursue their longtime dream of growing and producing world-class Pinot Noir, they invested in a 42-acre hilltop estate that had just been logged in the beautiful Dundee Hills of Oregon. With the support of their family - and to the surprise of many of their friends in Minnesota – the Evenstads established Domaine Serene, effectively creating Oregon’s luxury wine industry. They named the winery after their daughter, Serene, and their first vineyard on the estate was named after their son, Mark Bradford Evenstad.” Regal eagle’s head in logo.

Eagle Harbor Winery
The winery was established circa 2004 on Bainbridge Island, which is a small city in western Washington state, connected to Seattle by ferry. It is an absolute GEM! https://eagleharbor.wine/
Their site says “Our winemaking process sees wine for what it is—a living thing—and we consider it our job to tend to it, not control it. Starting with the selection of fruit from world-class growers in Washington’s most prestigious AVAs, followed by careful hand-sorting and destemming, attentive fermentation, and aging 24-36 months in barrel before bottling, every step of the process is designed to help the wine to achieve its full potential”.

4
Volat Fama
“Volat Fama” (Latin for “Fame Flies” or “Rumor Has Wings”) isn’t a specific wine name but a phrase found on labels like the classic Licor 43 spirit and some unique wines, hinting at reputation or intrigue, with Inama Vulcaia Fumè Sauvignon being a notable wine featuring volcanic terroir notes (smoky, citrus, mineral) that fits a distinct “fama” style, while other examples like a Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône also use the motto. “Per orbem wine” refers to wines with Latin phrases or producers using “Orbis” (world/circle) or “Perse,” like Orbis Moderandi Pet-Nat (a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc) or wines from Per Se Vines, known for terroir-focused wines, not a single brand, but rather a descriptor for wines gaining global reputation or specific artisanal producers.
IT’s COMPLICATED!
This is an unspecified (generic?) brand of a variety of a variety of wines, akin, perhaps, to Coca Cola Diet Cherry Cola…
And that’s the best I got, folks. The logo is a lovely graceful under-arch of feathers and mission architecture, perhaps only further identified by the number “1224”.

5
La -Mal Dita (Maldita)
Ready for some fun? Do girls just wanna have fun?? Are you only living once??? The label grapic of a crazed chica screaming as a bird is brandishing grapes in her hair sets the scene. I only ever taste a small percentage of these wines, but this one… ooooh, I wish.
La Maldita or the “little cursed one” references the care and effort associated with growing the delicate garnacha grape in rioja — but they’ve never been afraid of a challenge. This “little curse” has become their good fortune; producing high quality wine that celebrates heritage and showcases some of rioja’s best in Spain.
A trendy red; fresh and easy to drink wine, they say. A nimble one from old vines in Tudelilla and Central Rioja. Part of the wine (30%) was aged in barrels for three months, while the rest matured on the lees in tanks. More than 40 years old Garnacha Tinta vineyards, located at 2297 ft altitude in Tudelilla, Rioja Baja, and 1476 ft in Villamediana and Alberite.
This delightful garnacha is based on old-vines on high altitude vineyards to create a rich, velvety red with wonderful notes of strawberry and cherry. Enjoy with chicken, grilled meats, seafood and a variety of cheeses.
Ave LaMaldita!

6
Ocelli
The website for Ocelli wines is Ocelli Cellars (ocellicellars.com), a winery specializing exclusively in Grenache wines, founded by John & Sirpa Peacock, offering online sales, details on their wines like Grenache Rosé and various vineyard-specific Grenache bottlings, and information about their wine club. Usually I paraphrase/summarize, but their presentation is great reading.
From their website…
“Two people with a shared love of food and wine, with aspirations to truly be in charge of our own future, and decided that wine was the way forward. John’s career was spent in various analytical jobs, primarily in data and reporting management and software development. Beginning in 2010, he started helping friends during harvest when he could get away from work, and when we started Ocelli Cellars he started taking his vacation time in order to work harvest, both for Ocelli Cellars as well as to help friends. This on the job training was primarily done with Mo Ayoub of Ayoub Wines, who John considers his mentor. After being laid off from his “day job” in 2023, he is applying the same kind of analytical and problem solving skills honed through his career on the various aspects of wine production and small winery ownership.
Sirpa has spent the last 16 years working in the Oregon wine industry, primarily in tasting room sales, wine club management, event planning, and operations management. She is currently the Director of Sales and Marketing at Appassionata Estate, home of J Christopher Wines.
Why Grenache?
The complexity and nuance of the Grenache variety are immense, and there is a great variation of style. While Grenache is a relatively familiar grape variety, it is distinctly different from the more common focus of Washington, like Syrah or Cabernet. Grenache can be delicate and pretty, elegant and rich, or more structured and intense, and this range of styles lends to the variety to being a great one to create and build a brand portfolio with. As far as we know, we are the only winery in the northwest focused solely on Grenache. Our goal is to take a look at the various vineyards across the northwest producing Grenache and give them a touch of dedication and focus and make 100% Grenache from each of the sites we can.
Why Ocelli?
When brainstorming ideas for the name of the winery, we wanted the name to be associated with our surname, Peacock. Naming anything is a tedious undertaking and this was no different. The obvious options were already taken, so after learning far more about peacocks than we would care to admit, we came across a diagram of the various types of feathers, and saw the term ocelli when referring to the tail plumage. Ocelli are spots that look like eyes, like those of butterflies, ocelots, and the tail feathers of a peacock. After lengthy consideration, we felt that this name truly fit our brand and we had discovered our name.”
I LOVE IT… OCELLI…
Absolutely enchanting: it implies a sense that the feather looks back at you, offering its wine as reflection or simple ornament. I would never have guessed, but now that I know, I’ll never forget it.

Thanks, Brian!
