Best wines of 2018

Had the Cathiard RSV 2006 at a RSV tasting last Saturday and this was surely one of the best wines of 2018
Yesterday I hosted a dinner for friends where Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano 1971 was immensly beautiful
Also yesterday we drank a bottle I bought for much less than the current price and it proved to be one of the best white wines of my life - Ramonet Montrachet 1979
In January we had an amazing bottle of G. Rinaldi Barolo Brunate 2013 - far better than previous bottles of the same wine
On a less expensive level G. Rinaldi Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 has been fantastic on several occasions. Also the La Ca Nova Barbaresco Montefico 2014 is a beauty
Champagne - best of my year so far would be a an old Krug Rose - so elegant and seductive

Ive been happy to see that too! although there are definitely some huge bottles mentioned so far…!

Interesting to look at the wines I consumed this year and see which ones I noted as having my highest personal score (each a 94 if anyone is curious).

1997 Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT
2010 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Burt Williams’ Morning Dew Ranch
2012 Saxum James Berry Vineyard
2013 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin
2014 MacDonald Cabernet Sauvignon
2015 Di Costanzo Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard

Each of the wines was outstanding, enjoyed with family and friends, yet a simple and somewhat ephemeral experience. This year, I have not yet tasted that celestial wine for which one writes sonnets. With fifty-five days remaining on this year’s calendar and holidays approaching, I may yet be so blessed. I remain hopeful.

1982 Château Léoville Las Cases from jeroboam;
2008 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos;
2005 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino

I think I’ve actually enjoyed other wines more due to the right circumstances of sharing with my solely with my SO or family, but I don’t think those wines were as impressive objectively.

I opened a pair of these back for Ron’s 75’s Birthday celebration 5+ years ago…I thought they were amazing but many ignored them. Glad to see they’re holding up still!

There were many great wines, these are all from times with people that were really important to me…which is why I think they’re also here.
