My daughter and son in law where married in 2009 and I’m thinking of giving them 2 or 3 btls of traditionally styled 2009 BDX for Christmas to cellar and open down the road for thier 10th, 15th, 20th or 25th. I’m leaning towards Leoville Barton because so many older btls I’ve tasted impressed me. Don’t want to spend over $125 per. They seem to prefer cabernet based wines over my fav region - Burgundy or I’d go that route.
For whatever it is worth, the following are within the stated budget (some very well within) and I deem good buys for 2009 Haut Médocs (yes, I’ve tried them all): Batailley, Sociando Mallet, Gruaud Larose, Léoville Barton, Rauzan Ségla, Siran, & Poujeaux.
Best,
N
Good list, but beginning in 2009 Poujeaux was modernizing, and by 2010 they were no longer traditional. Canon made a great 2009 at the top of your price range.
Hi, Mark. Didn’t know that until now (and, consequently, when I tasted it). The 2009 didn’t seem particularly modern for the producer the couple of times I tried it. Actually, I recall thinking it would grow up to be similar to its 1996. Only time will tell. Haven’t really tasted through the Bdx 2010s yet, but of the 5 or so 2010 Bdx I’ve tried so far, they all seem very big, ripe, rich, concentrated, and modern to me.
Best,
N
Thanks guys, appreciate your thoughts.
I loved the Gruaud Larose when I tasted it about half a year ago. I think it will definitely be age-worthy enough to make the 25-year mark that you are looking for.
It was bought by Philippe Cuvelier owner of Clos Fourtet in 2008. The 2009 was noticeably more modern, and as this is a chateau I tend to follow, different enough for me to ask what happened. With the 2010s, I gave up hope.
I agree the 1996 is just coming into its own, and the 1982s are still lovely.
L-B, Calon Segur, Gruaud Larose…
Yes. And GPL, Duhart Milon, Domaine de Chevalier.
I second GL. Nick’s list is pretty spot on.
