Best of the Languedoc?

Yes, it’s hard to generalize given the different grapes used. A wine dominated by carignane won’t resemble a syrah or cabernet, and grenache-heavy blends will have their own taste and style.

On the whole, I think the Southern Rhone is the closest region in terms of texture, and the variety of grapes used.

'Zackly. People Like Dan Kravitz, Bobby Katcher, Kermit Lynch have made a living on finding great bargains here -

I resemble that remark.

It’s easy to rage at whatever upcharges KLWM is imposing on certain rarities, but there’s still an ocean of non collectible sub $30 estates they bring in, where - for me - their stamp of approval is enough. I just picked up some Corbieres from them. I’m hoping its not as leathery as ones I remember from years ago…

Totally agree on Gaussac, Barral, L’Aiguliere, and Peyre-Rose. I’d also recommend D’Auphilac, which should be readily available in the US as a Kermit import.

This thread reminds me that I owe a debt of gratitude to Bob Spector on Compuserve’s wine board for introducing me to L’Aiguelière and Peyre Rose. He was a passionate evangelist for the region and his enthusiasm was contagious.

Me too…he and Doug Powers were both fans of a lot of the Sud wines and encouraged me to try those as well as things like Gassac, Mas Champart, d’Aupilhac, etc.
