Best Gamay outside of Beaujolais (or similar)

I spend a few weeks per year in Switzerland, so I am familiar with the Chappaz wines. Another producer from the Valais I like that produces a gamay is Christophe Abbet, and in particular his “a propos d’ailes” from an old vineyard, elevage en barrique - his other gamays don’t see wood.

I’ll second Vincent. Hervé Souhaut also makes a distinctive Gamay. I love it, but it is not for all tastes.

NOT Beaujolais but 100% Gamay. Linot Martin Bugey-Cerdon Methode Ancestrale.
Sparkling Gamay Rose. Delicious!

Color Collector makes delicious gamay. They have vineyards in Oregon and Washington. The entry level willamette valley gamay noir is very very good.

Recently discovered Sérol and love the wines. Very pure. In Basalt not dissimilar to what we have in the Eola Amity Hills in the Willamette Valley

Always interesting that the reference point wines tend to be so much less expensive than the alternatives from other regions. These are expensive Gamays. Now that said, they could be worth every penny.

Saxony in Germany is starting to plant a bit of gamay (they’ve got some solid granitic soil). I’m keeping my eyes on that for a couple of years down the road, once it’s a bit more established.

Plus a delicious Gamay rosé to boot.

Just piling on with Domaine Serol. Some excellent Gamay coming from them.

It’s Switzerland.
What isn’t more expemsive there?
And probably the most celebrated/famous estate in the whole country, which doesn’t make it cheaper.

Ha, good point! I would definitely like to try it.

Timo Mayer’s Gamay from Yarra Yarra. Not just the light and ripe red fruit you get from a lot of new world interpretations, felt very reminiscent of the application of Gamay that offers connections to Northern Rhône. Earth tones, smoke to pair with the red fruit and acidity.

Also Darling Wines Gamay from Sonoma. Excellent (as is Tom’s Passetoutgrains)

My favorite is Holus Bolus in Santa Rita Hills → the grapes are from their (small) vineyard ‘Joy Fantastic’ which is on the western edge of SRH (near Radian & Bentrock). I am a SRH fan and have enjoyed other Gamays from the area. I saw Whitcraft and Lieu Dit mentioned above.

Never heard of them, thanks.

Good for them planting a vineyard in that area, great spot. And they planted gamay, God bless them.

Holus Bolus?? Is that next to the Gluteus Maximus vineyard?

I’ll join the three board members who have suggested Domaine Sérol from the Côte Roannaise. Our local importer put me onto their Granit cuvée two to three years ago and it has been a go to ever since.

It’s a great story here. Peter and Amy are the co-owners / co-winemakers / co-everything else and bootstrap the full operations at the winery. they lease the vineyard I believe from some entity / people with much $. They took the decision to replant a small portion of Pinot Noir to Gamay as a passion project. I think their vineyard got hit w disease and they’ve been scrapping away. I’m in the wine club and totally rooting for them. Both are on various podcasts and def worth a listen. Go to any other winery in SRH and they all rave about Holus Bolus.

That’s Stan Kroenke country around there. Walmart money.

He owns 3500 acres and the radiant and bentrock vineyards. We were stealing walnuts off the ground from the side of the road one year and he flew over in his jet helicopter. We waved :waving_hand:. LOL

That dirt is a gold mine if the wine industry didn’t go in the toilet.
