This thread prompted me to pick up a few bottles of 2011 Cosme Les Deux Albion to give it a whirl. In a mixed case of yet more 2011 Bojos, so a good order! I’ll check in on Tuesday when they arrive.
Hard to pick just one so here are a few…
NV Scharfenberger Brut $13 - outstanding value
Toad Hollow Chardonnay - $9 - delcioious unoaked Chardonnay
Acacia A PN -0 $12-$16 - drinks more like $25 plus in a classic traditional Burg way
Pine Ridge - Viognier/Chenin $10 - maybe the best value in white wine
Monte Antico Toscana - $10 how do you beat this for an everyday red?
My best cheap wines were '95 Clos Roche Blanche Côt for $8.99 and '95 Marc Ollivier Clos des Briords for $7.99. Not just cheap, but truly great wines that totally changed the way I look at wine. Thank you Robert Callahan for introducing me to them.
I have to say the regular 2011 Cosme Cdr isn’t doing much for me. Had to try it after reading this thread. I last tasted it a few years ago and my take on it has not changed. I don’t like it today either. Maybe I don’t like S Rhone Syrah.
I hardly pick up any Syrah varietal characteristics from this wine. But even if I put aside varietal expectations, I do not find the wine interesting. Its not checking off any boxes for me. It’s balanced but leans to a modern style. I don’t find it packs much fruit expression. Maybe it needs some air.
I can’t say I really know of any other $15 Cdr’s that I love either, Syrah or otherwise. In the $20-25 range I find the Coudoulet more interesting. At this price point, I’d rather splurge $5 more and upgrade. And I know of one $15 Chilian Syrah (Koyle) that is more along what I would like in a Syrah at this price point.
