Best Bordeaux $20-$50 range (2024 edition)

I just picked up some more 2016 Lilian Ladouys for $20 and some 2019 Cantemerle for $25. Hard to go wrong at that price point for those. Capbern is another annual good buy that is usually under $35.

Haut Bages Liberal was mentioned earlier, but I’d like to note you can still get the 2016 for $50 or under some places! A recent bottle was quite good.

2016 Lilian at $8 from the UGC bankruptcy sale was likely one of the greatest wine buys for me last year.

The $100 range seems a little high in the $20-$50 range discussion? :wink:

Related, I just got an email from Flickinger in Chicago. They purchased a cellar of Bordeaux, mostly from the 2010’s. Good prices. I just bought all the Gloria. Happy hunting!

I modestly round up

Saw that Clos du Marquis '19 is $59 here, close enough for me :slight_smile:.

This and a similar thread got me to pick up '19 Poujeaux and Cantemerle to try, neither has replaced '19 S-M as the go-to house cab.

Sneaker-guy sells Chateau Le Reysse which drinks way above its price point:

Bellefont-Belcier is the other favorite value wine.

“Billable hours” are for commodity lawyers…

If you are going up to $100, how about adding Brane Cantenac and Leoville Barton.

And, tax lawyers.

At the low end of this range, I’ve greatly enjoyed Ch Peybonhomme-les-Tours, which are from Cotes de Bourg. They have a range of maybe a dozen cuvees and are biodynamic, which sounds very modern-ish - but the main cuvee and the tete du cuvee, Ch. La Grolet, are old school in profile and really scratch the pyrazine itch if you like that (which I very much do).

Surprised to see no mention of Pedesclaux thus far. Such a killer wine for <$40

Another one missing;

Bel Air Marquis d’Aligre (BAMA as many on this board refer to it)

Use to be ~50 and hard to find in the US, but I have been continuously impressed by this classic, sleeper of a wine. Worry it’s going to disappear soon into history.

Pitray might be up to $20 now

Hard to go wrong with just about any vintage of Dame de Montrose these days.

I would also strongly suggest you consider 2019 Gloria. It is an incredible vintage for them- here is my recent TN,

bright young red-purple color, at opening attractive nose of ripe raspberry and plum with ample mineral notes throughout and hints of spice, on the palate more than its usual endearing self- it is almost sexy and yet despite the cuddly mid-weight plum and red raspberry fruit there is a good solid structure underlying to keep everything ever so gently classically restrained, over the first thirty minutes the raspberry notes on the palate become quite assertive and opulent while unusually decadent levels of spice come into play on the long finish, tannins coming along fairly quickly as well- still in check but growing in presence, over the course of 4 hours the wine has only grown in strength and is now on a scale one rarely sees with Gloria, the overall package is still a solid midweight- and where this will end up in time, but for now the tannins are almost chewy and impart a certain sauvage to accompany a broad palate of spicy plums and tart raspberry notes with zesty acidity akin to a feisty young Chateau Magdelaine, exceptional length with ripe fruit and chalk notes, and all throughout the steely mineral notes remain, as I enjoy this I am starting to wonder if perhaps my encounter with 2019 Montrose recently was not all that singular as this too is showing a lot more heft and earthy boisterousness than usual, happily a good friend in NY is organizing a revisiting of the 2019 vintage this fall which will tell that tale best, meantime- this is a wonderful Gloria that I think in time will be just as we longtime fans have come to expect, but it is going to take a few more years than usual to get there, and given the exceptional balance here that can only mean great things to come, a must-have 2019.

** ( ** ) +, this may end up a 5 star wine in time, 2029++

Also- I have not tried any 2022 Bordeaux just yet, but I would keep my eyes open as they hit shelves. To date I have had a number of 2022 Burgundies and a handful of entry level wines from other parts of France, and it is a really special vintage. Even at the entry level the wines have an extra bit of joy and velvety appeal that you cannot really capture in the 100 point scale. It is a rare vintage where I am buying a number of under $50 wines since they should be really exceptional in just a few years time.

To the original poster, you need a new provider. Those prices are stupid. Shop around.
