Funny - I got shut out of the Bedrock Heirloom because I waited 2 hours to order after receiving the email. Lo and behold, I go to my LWS (The Wine Country in Signal Hill, CA) today, and they have a couple of cases on display (and at $32.99 to boot)!
Talked to Morgan yesterday and he said that mailing is indeed starting again but certain shipments are being held because of weather concerns (namely, mine, and pretty much all other east coast orders).
Got a reply from Morgan today. As Mike said orders on the East Coast are being held. Orders with Mags won’t be shipped til next week, as they were taking longer for labeling.
I completely agree with the weather-hold decision. Just have to laugh because it was only about 2 weeks ago that we got past being too hot to ship, and now it’s too cold. If our climate doesn’t straighten up, all my wine’s going to have to come during one week in April and one week in October.
Fred, got the email from Golden Gate and took a flyer on two based on Morgan’s participation. Wine arrived today so will be making an entry in CT and will probably try one over the holidays. Google search turned up Bricolage Brands dba Lacuna Wines. Principals are Nicholas Clifford, Aaron Dornstreich and Peter Schilla. I presume some on the board may know them, I don’t. Sent an email requesting info about the wines and got a prompt response from Aaron. Here’s an excerpt:
“Lacuna was conceived by 3 wine professionals, myself included, who have been in the wine business for many years. We have held positions as wine consultants, sommeliers, importers, brand managers, wine brokers but this is our first venture into creating our own wine. We have worked closely with Morgan Twain-Peterson for a few years now and we fell in love with his Bedrock wines. We felt he was the ideal person to make our wine and he was kind enough to agree.
Each year, Lacuna will be sourced from the best vineyards around California. Many of these vineyards are acclaimed and typically contribute to much more expensive wines than ours. To protect the innocent, we agree not to share the grape sources and in return have the freedom to price our wine at a much more affordable price. Our motto is to offer a $60 bottle of wine for under $30. The blend will change each year but our philosophy for crafting a layered, complex wine that over delivers for the price will always remain.
This first vintage resulted in a high toned, aromatic wine with excellent structure and many layers of savory notes. It turned out even better than we had originally expected. White pepper, lavender, black olives and herbs de provence dominate the aromatics. On the palate it seems to have a very fine tannin structure with no abrasive edges but enough to reward a few years of cellaring. There is some nice dark fruit components leaning towards blackberry and current but the wine is not overtly fruity. A superb wine with food and perfect for Fall/Winter fare.”
It was ten below here this morning so I’m thinking the decision not to ship east was a good one. Unfortunately, we are looking at another arctic blast for next week too… I’m really hoping that things improve and I can get this and other shipments in before the holidays.
Had the '09 Old Vine Zin a few weeks ago and loved it. Opened the '09 Stellwagen tonight, decanted it and not so sure. The spice and bramble were there, but a little weak. Expected a little bigger wine based on the Old Vine. The Old Vine was the better wine. Another mixed case is arriving next week. We’ll see what that brings.
Interestingly, the winemaker has nearly the exact opposite sense of the wines; Old Vines not ready, Stellwagen should be (but he’s not opening anything of his for a year, anyway).
I know that’s why I opened the Stellwagen up as our “Saturday night” wine. I thought it would be even better than the Old Vine. Oh well, more of Morgan’s wines are on the way next week.
Opened an 09 Sonoma Coast syrah last night…wow
After a couple of hours uncorked (which I’m not really sure made a difference), the nose was quintessential CA syrah - meat, leather, salt, dark fruit and baking spice. If you like savory, you could not ask for anything more. Just a hint of oak that in no way took away from what the fruit had to offer. Great structure with well balanced tannins on the finish, which lingered for quite a while. I don’t think this needs any additional time in the bottle and can be enjoyed right now.
I will say there was some secondary fermentation/gas present that was quickly dispensed with after a vigorous shake of the bottle.
An absolutely incredible value at $20 that, honestly, rivals the best Sonoma syrahs I’ve had.
