Dear Pitmasters,

Somewhat simple question:

Where should I look to in order to buy hickory/oak/etcera logs, not chips, for barbecueing? What businesses would sell those? Nurseries? Landscaping companies? Tree removal companies?

try firewood companies. the kind of guy that comes with a cord or face cord for your fireplace.

I have found several local sources on craigslist, and most of them were firewood suppliers, per Tex’s post. The guys that do this for a living know what kind of wood they have and how to market it.

I thought of firewood vendors, but here’s the question…is the same wood one uses in the fireplace apt for cooking? If so, do these companies offer different types? What’s normally used for fireplaces around our area? If you know.

Maybe and maybe not. All firewood should be seasoned, meaning it has been air dried to remove a certain percentage of moisture and is no longer considered green. Problem is that you might get any variety of hardwood delived to be burnt and they are not all equal. You would need to explicitly verify the species of wood you are using so that you do not wind up with soot, resin, etc on your product.

What I think you would be able to readily find:

White/Red/Live Oak
Hickory (Pecan)
Sugar/Rock Maple
Apple
Cherry (Non Orchard as the wood can/will soak up pesticides)
