Some intriguing values at the WHWC Italian sale. But for my money, nothing better than the '08 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo for $80 and change after the 20% discount. More than a case in stock.
Gotta love these sales where the Wine-Searcher price shows where the price was yesterday. For example, the 2000 Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia Riserva was $179.95…sale happens today and bam!!!, it’s $199.99 on their site now. Ok…after 20% off, it’s still cheaper than the rest of the market ($160) but its just a shady business practice.
I ended up with 09 Giacosa Barbaresco Asili ($79 after discount) and the 05 Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra ($51 after discount).
There are great discounts out there from time to time on great Italian wines, if you’re on the lookout. So many good vintages piled up the last 15 years, and there’s bound to be a need for inventory reduction at times.
I should qualify that I did buy some bottles…the ones I’m most excited to try are the '78 Borgogno Barbaresco Riserva. Great vintage and I love the mature flavors of this region.
I read their fine print on that, if you are outside the Los Angeles area and weather is too hot (like now), they will hold your bottles for a maximum of 4 months. That would put it at roughly December 13, which is more than enough time for the weather to cool.
I either missed the G. Mascarello, or it wasn’t on there last night when I shopped. That’s a good price for what is (I assume, I haven’t had a 2006 yet) a great wine. I think I paid $100@ for my two bottles, though without shipping.
It’s a bummer how sharply the price of Monprivato has risen the last 6 years or so, but it’s probably still a solid value for the quality.
