Barossa suggestions sought

Hi Randall,

Don’t know much about Abottsford, looks ok on their site though. If all else fails the Novatel resort is not bad 4 star accommodation.

With regards to Adelaide dining here are my thoughts;

T-Chow: Kent is right, great restaurant. Pig stomach and pepper soup, T-Chow Duck, Scallops with ginger and shallots, pork and broad bean hot pot and cabbage rolls are my favourites.

For yum cha there are three excellent restaurants. Star House (good all-rounder) in Gouger St in the city, Maple House(fabulous century egg conge and braised tripe) in the North Adelaide village and Eastern Garden (best dumpling chef in Adelaide) on Greenhill rd at Burnside.

Adelaide is full of good Italian restaurants. At the posh end of the spectrum Chianti is very good with a good list, Enzo’s on Port Rd is daggy but the food is excellent and you can byo. Auge is modern Italian and a nice experience.

For fancy pants meals the best two options would be The Pot on King William Rd and The Manse in North Adelaide.

A great relative newcomer is Vincenzo’s on Unley Rd. The food is modern and cerebral and you can byo.

The Urban Bistro does Adelaide’s best breakfast and their lunch and dinner is more than serviceable.

Cos is fairly boring.

Best Regards
Jeremy

Great info, Jeremy–thank you!

No probs Randall, send me a pm when you get your dates locked in and we’ll get you around for a meal Chez Holmes if it fits in.

Jeremy

Jeremy or Kent, I know that The Grange (in the Hilton) closed. Has the chef gone on to do anything else? I know there were a lot of people who really dug what he did but I never had a great meal there.

John,

Cheong Liew was the chef and he has gone to Melbourne to oversee the kitchen at The Botanical in South Yarra. I ate there in December and the food is very good, not as fussy as the Grange but pure and inventive.

Cheong is a very good cook and a terrific bloke, he has a kitchen in Adelaide at which he will cook for private groups and his daughter Gina (a very good cook in her own right) makes the most wonderful macaroons.

Best Regards
Jeremy

John,
Unfortunately the Grange got panned by a food critic in a national daily, whcih signalled the end.

I ate at the Grange a couple of times and also at Cheong’s original restaurant and had some great meals, although the ambience at The Grange was a bit sterile.

Cheers,
Kent

Thanks guys. Next time I make it to Oz I will try and check out his place in Melbourne.

Hi Randy,
Have your taste changed that much…I have had a very short crush-on Aussie wines but left in a hurry!
I still have two wines Mollydooker "The velvet Glove " 2006 and Dead Arm same vintage…will spoil them on my nephew next time.
Have a safe trip.

Well, thank you very, very kindly, and I certainly shall do so, Jeremy!

Hey, Dr. V! No, my tastes haven’t changed very much, apart from the fact that I’ve been becoming more of a Bubblehead and Burgophile. I’ve always found plenty of Aussie wines to like both here–although the pricing in the DC area has gotten pretty steep–and on on my visits to Oz, where it’s great fun to visit the wineries as well as to have the sommeliers at good restaurants pick out something new and nice. Actually we had a Dead Arm from 2001 or 2002 several months back and it was lovely–don’t give them all to Razz!

Actually, Dead Arm can be stunning, very much menthol, but I had this say 10 years older or more WOW. [drinkers.gif]

Thanks Jon–much appreciated!
