We are planning a trip to Banner Elk, NC at the end of the year for NYE. Will be staying for a week with three other families. We will fly into Charlotte and making the drive from there.

Does anyone have any recommendations for wine shops in the Charlotte area that we can stop by on the way to Banner Elk? I was thinking about maybe having some wine shipped out there but not sure how the weather will be. Average temps are 50 high / 28 low. Last year it looks like it held closer to a 45 low, but did drop to 25 and ever zero for a couple days.

Last year it was 80+ degrees in Charlotte on Christmas. I walked the golf course in shorts. Banner Elk is a fantastic little town. Exs best friends in laws had a place at Elk River, so lots of weekend trips there. Good times. I’m not sure about Charlotte wine shops. If Bond Street is still operating, I would check in with Sam. If you enjoy Pacific Northwest wines, I might be an option. Hahaha…

For Charlotte wine shops Bond Street Wines is still open and Petit Philippe in the Park Rd shopping center carries some higher end wines.

Peabody’s in Boone, which is down the road from Banner Elk off 105 is a good shop. I will caution that prices in NC are probably not going to be wine-searcher low.

I don’t think you will have too much of a problem shipping to CLT that time of year, but temps in Banner Elk are much colder than CLT so keep in mind depending on where you are shipping.

If you are willing to drive a little bit, I’d encourage you to check out the restaurant at Gideon Ridge Inn in Blowing Rock but make reservations early as they fill up that time of year.

I saw Sam last night at the monthly Cork Vault bottle share, but I did not ask about a relocation plan. Most if not all of the other businesses have vacated the building. I’m not sure if anyone knows if Bond Street will be operating from the current location around the holidays.

I have a place in BE and am there about 6 months a year - but December isn’t one of them.
I second the Peabody’s recommendation; our local store, Erik’s Wine and Cheese is out of biz.
Dining here is fair to good but not better. Uncle Lee’s for Thai food, Stonewalls for steak; Banner Elk Cafe for 7 days a week pub food. Almost everything else is over-priced.
Apple Hill Farm Outpost for frozen stuff to take back to your place and cook.
And it will be cold, sometimes, brutally so.
And of course, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain for skiing/winter sports.
