Austin Dining

I find myself in Austin a lot and am exploring the dining scene. Would love to start a thread on spots. Will share a few I’ve explored in East and Downtown Austin in the coming days!

A little out of the way but great food at Nixta Taqueria:

If you time it right, you can stop next door Comadre Panaderia for some Mexican baked goods:

Both highly recommended despite the location a little north of East Austin. A caveat though, fine dining establishments they are not.

Fine dining is overrated! This is what I’m talking about.

I haven’t been in a while, but I’m a big fan of Veracruz All Natural Tacos. Also had a fun pizza/wine experience at Bufalina. I feel like the owner is a board member but I could be wrong.

Correct. I believe there are three locations of the pizza places, the original being Bufalina.

That’s me.

Faryan, let me know if you’d like to share a bottle sometime, though I’m getting ready to leave town and won’t be back until March.

Some of my favorites: Birdie’s, Cuantos Tacos (BYO), for BBQ: Micklethwait, Leroy & Lewis, LA BBQ, Franklin, KG. (Or Louis Mueller, if you have a car.) Most of my wine meals with friends are at Chinese at places like Seven Spice, Bamboo House, or Din Ho, all of which allow corkage. At the higher end, Craft Omakase for sushi (I believe $50 corkage), Clark’s for seafood, Jeffrey’s for steaks and half off bottles on Sunday. Cheap, old-school Tex-Mex: Habanero Cafe. For cocktails check out Small Victory or Holiday. If you’re interested in something specific, let me know.

Thanks for the warm hospitality Steven. Would love to get a meal when you’re back in town.

Here are a few of my faves so far

Canje - really enjoyed the meal. Fun, Caribbean fusion. Good cocktails.

ATX Cocina - expense account spot. Few standout dishes (shrimp coctel, sopes, whole fish).

Intero - on my hot list for this month. Came recco’d from my EA friends.

Ditto, Tatsu-Ya. Loved the sandwiches at Yellow Jacket Social. Love the coffee at what is now Pershing East, want to try Figure 8. Also enjoyed some roasted beans from Sightseer in South Congress area.

Figure 8 and Flat Track are my go-to spots. (I work near Flat Track.) Fleet is also worth checking out.

For ramen, I like Sazan and Marufuku (the CA chain), but I also hit Tatsuya… they’re Austin ramen OG, and it’s a quick in-and-out for lunch.

The chef/owner of Intero, Ian, is a great guy and usually runs service.

Everything in the vicinity of ATX Cocina is built for expense accounts, but if you’re stuck down there, both Peacock and Lambert’s are pretty good.

Had an industry event dinner at Perry’s this past week😔…

Will endeavor to get out to Intero in early Feb and maybe one or two of the Ramen joints mentioned.

Ouch.

Try to get to Birdie’s, and chat up Arjav about wine.

Had dinner at Intero last night.

Cabbage appetizer and rigatoni. The cabbage was great, the rigatoni pretty good. Cabbage had a lovely mustard sauce, texture, char, just awesome.

Definitely enjoyed the vibe. Saw Steven’s spot packed with young energy on my walk back. Will queue it up!

lol now I know why. Just saw Bufalina’s wine list and pizza pics…Incredible!

If anyone here wants to do a wine dinner chez Stephen, I’d be happy to wine check something befitting in to town and to order some gems.
